incline press v. chest press

Hi all,

I just started weight training on the machines a month ago and am wondering why I can do a lot more weight on the incline press than the chest press. To be specific, my current routine for the incline is (120 lbs x 12, 130 lbs x 6, 130 lbs to failure) whereas the same for the chest press is (70 lbs x 12, 80 lbs x 6, 80 lbs to failure). Is this normal or am I not using the equipment right? I would think I should be able to do a lot more on the chest press than the incline.

Sometimes the weights on the machines vary, or they are just numbered with 1, 2, 3 etc , or they don't carry across. If they are the same, something is definitely wrong, are you sure youre using it correctly?

At any rate, you should try to be using regular free weights anyway, if you don't know how, just ask someone who definitely does. Free weights are without a doubt way better than any machine.

Hey, fellow Cornellian!? Perhaps I've bumped into you at Teagle?

You know, you're probably right that the numbers don't carry over. Somebody told me that 1, 2, 3... = 10 lbs, 20 lbs, 30 lb... and being a gullible novice I took his word for it but this was probably the mistake.

Wanted to try free weights but was worried about not having a person to spot. Maybe I can start out without maxing out.

Thanks for your help anyways.

Crazy, you can find me at teagle downstairs pretty often (although I've been pretty sick and haven't gone since last week, i hate it).

You can ask anybody to spot you, or the people who work there, everyone is usually more than willing, you should definitely go with the free weights though.
