Inbetween weights on machine

We have a weight lifting machine that I've been using to do my weight lifting on. One of the things I'm having the hardest time with is that the weights are in 10lb increments. This is fine for my legs, but my upper body has always been much weaker, and just when it seems like I could move up to the next increment, I can barely get a rep in. I feel like I'm really fighting the machine just to finish my exercises on it!

What can I do to help transition my body into the next increment? Should I do smaller reps? Presently I don't have a fixed set amount. I weight lift for 30 - 45 minutes and when I've reached my time, I stop. Sets aren't really counted - I just take 30 secs rest between the next rep.

The more I read, the more it seems like I should be lifting weights more than doing my run. Should I do weight training more than running?

Ugh, I hate that too. At my gym it's 5 pound increments, but it jumps from 15 to 30 with no in between, and it would be nice on my arms to have some kind of smaller jump to the next step.

I don't have any answer for you, I just share your pain. :(

You could try hanging a 5lb or 2.5lb plate off the pin, if there's enough room.

I think they mean the actual machines where you move the pin to change weight, not free weights, but that's actually a really good idea.

You could do free weights for the in between weights and always go back to the machines when you feel more comfortable...

Why did I never think of that?
