In need of some help

Long story short, my life needs a change and I want to adopt a healthier lifestyle and try to get in shape. I didn't know where to ask, so I turned to google and found this site, and hope someone here can give me some advice.

I have stopped drinking pop and eating snack foods as a start for a diet. As for exercise, I have tried to walk, but my shins and bottoms of my feet soon become sore. Aside from that, I'm not sure what other steps I can take. Thanks for any help.
