In need of motivation

Glad I found this forum. I joined a gym last week and I am so sore today...only worked out one day (Tuesday). After weighing myself today, I want more than ever to get rid of this weight. I don't know where to start though.

Hi MichelleThomas welcome! yes, the muscles will get sore beginning workouts, even after you've done them for a while as you push new limits. But it means the muscles are growing stronger, a good sign. I'd suggest a balanced program of cardio and weight routines. Also just pick up the daily activity in general.

To lose fat, it's generally quite simple, you've heard it before, take in less calories than you burn. First determine how many calories are in the foods that your eating, then approximate how many calories your burning daily. The Internet is great for finding calculators for fat loss, play with a few of them, they will put in the ball park. Too much weight is very unhealthy and increases your risk of many diseases besides just looking and feeling awful.

Hi Michelle you'll hear a lot of people say No Pain - No Gain. I don't believe in it. If you're feeling too sore after a gym workout to continue for the rest of the week you may want to alter what you're doing or the pace. I am not an expert but I have managed to do a cardio workout (simple jogging on the spot to music) of between 30-60 mins every day for 17 days straight and lost 15 pounds in the process. I don't do it all in one go, there's no gym involved and I never feel unable to workout the next day.

Welcome to the forum.

It is normal for new exercise to tire us - but physical pain can indicate an injury - so if you are in any doubt it is worth consulting a doctor. He may feel that a physiotherapist needs to determine whether you are injured.

If you have to rest from exercise for a while - it doesn't mean that your project to lose weight has to end. While activity is important - more weight is lost and gained in the kitchen compared to the gym anyway. Healthy food choices at the right portion size can enable a totally sedentary person to lose weight. Many of us gain weight because we eat badly. We may not be particularly active - but our weight would not have got big if we had just eaten better.

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.
