I am a 20 year old male, 6ft and 180. i am a good athlete and work out (lift or basketball) on a nearly daily basis, but i still have about 12% body fat. i have changed my diet to lessen my carb intake and have dropped a little weight but i fear that i am burning as much muscle as i am fat and of corse dont want to do that. if anyone could get me any sort of advice on my situation it would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot!

Why the hell are you lessening your carbohydrates?... They're what keep you going through the day.

Read some stickies, get a feel for what works and what doesn't, just eat healthier and exercise and weight train more.

sorry about the double post, i dont understand what i am supposed to do as far as working out though. is my lifting program simply not intense enough then? because i have been active in sports my whole life. its not a matter of performance because i have that, i just do not how to get rid of that fat because that obviously hasnt been accompanying my muscle growth very much. if cutting calories isnt what i should do then what is? its not a matter of disipline because i workout almost daily. thanks for your posts, anything suggestions would be awsome.

First off, why do you think you're losing lots of muscle?

Has performance and/or strength declined?

yeah there is a lack of energy while lifting, but i am also basing that off what i have read about cutting calories. so is it possible that eating under 1100/1200 calories a day is fine? i know that i can keep up cutting calories that low, but only if that means i am cutting fat and not significantly dropping my muscle mass. a little i can understand but not that much. i also heard many mixed messages about fat loss pills. especially since i feel that i am not WAY overweight, but being 12% at 180 pounds is definately not where i want to be. so dropping 3-5% would be great. as always any tips would be sweet.

It's possible, but I wouldn't do it.

Muscle maintenance is achieved by adequate protein consumption, appropriate weight training, and genetics.

In general, if you're strength is diminishing, you should be concerned.

How many calories are you consuming now?

i have returned back to my normal eating right now just because i dont know exactly what to do, but before this post i could range from as low as 950 to about 1300. but at that time i just figured eat three "solid" meals, i know i should switch to 6 smaller meals but i'm not sure how much to consume. it is also hard because as i am a college student my meals are not always the prime things you are looking for. in no instance do i eat junk food/soda any of that. Thanks again for your continuing help.
