Improving upon my free weight workout. Need advice

I need advice, I've been doing my workouts for each muscle group in sets of 6, with the 6th set being a different exercise targeting the same area.

Starting with (reps + adding weight) 12, 10, 8, 6, 12 12

My question is this: I've noticed that my left arm, when doing a dumbell curl cannot do as many as my right arm. Yes I'm right handed. Would moving to a machine or doing this with a barbell and weight improve this. It's really frustrating to be on a 12 rep set (set 5, next to last) and not be able to finish with my left arm.

I start to loose form and I know it's not giving me the full workout, so I have just backed off the weight some at that point to atleast finish.

I know it's mind over matter and you have to find your inner strength, I'm not giving up by any means, I just want to improve.

This is not uncommon and you shouldnt become discouraged. However from now on, always start with the weaker arm, and only do as many with the strong arm as the weak arm can do as well. This will prevent 10 reps every workout with strong hand, and 9 with weak. That would only continue the unbalance.

that sounds like the body for life workout.

anyhow, no, don't switch to a barbell, because that's just going to allow your strong side to pick up the slack and leave the weak side weak.

i'm with tony...do at least every other set with your weak side first. unilateral exercising with dumbbells is the best way to correct imbalances in size and/or strength.
