I'm having trouble losing weight, I can't (gastroparesis) really eat a healthy diet (i.e. whole wheat, brocolli, high fiber, etc.) I want to start running to lose weight but I'm too heavy to do that. The fat is around my hips stomach and groin area. I've seen people who were more heavy than I am look hot. I'm about 270lbs. I want to lose at least a 100lbs. My question is will the fat in the above areas eventually diminish and my penis size go back to normal and every thing else shrink. The only way that I know how to lose the weight fast is to drink whey protein shakes and don't eat anything. I want to get down to a safe weight so I can run. I'm 42 and my goal is to be think again before I'm 43 which will be next September 2012. Thanks. Any ideas.

TBH, 100lb is better as a 2yr goal than a 1yr goal, but if you get down to 220lb with more muscle mass by the time you're 43, you'll be doing well.

I can't give you good dietary advice because I'm unfamiliar with your medical condition, but grains in general are overrated. If you ask a paleo dieter, they'll probably give you some spiel about grains being poison. I won't go that far, but grains really don't have any important nutrients in them that you can't get from better sources. So feel free to omit them from your diet. Actually, just doing that probably will help with weight loss, in and of itself. Can you eat meat? If so, eat it. Can you eat eggs? If so, eat them. Can you eat nuts? If so, have some. Can you drink milk? If so, drink it. Can you eat other fruits and vegetables? If so, eat them. So long as you're in a calorie deficit (500kcal/week below maintenance), you'll be fine.

And for weight loss, running's overrated. If you want to run later on, then that's fine. For now, focus on just moving your body any way you can safely do so. Build up to doing strength training. This should make up the bulk of your training. You won't get bigger from it while you're cutting - it's impossible. It'll just make sure you keep your muscle mass (and maybe gain a little of it), so that the weight you lose has to come from fat.

Gastroparesis is a delay of the stomach muscles. It doesn't contract like regular peoples stomachs. So the food stays in the stomach longer and when that happens bacteria builds up and causes vomiting and nausea as well as bowel issues (bathroom several times a day about 10 times). I can't have fiber or at least limit it. The fiber foods stay in stomach longer and causes bezoars which are deadly in some cases. So eating meats as I do love eating meat I try to avoid. I like pistachios and eggs. Grains I should avoid and some vegetables like broccoli are foods that I need to avoid. I'm so frustrated that today I've stopped eating and started a liquid diet, mostly liquid. Seems as though food makes me sick. I'm drinking tea, ensure, taking vitamins, maybe an apple here and there, and Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein to get my protein intake so I don''t lose muscle mass. Maybe sometime in the near future I will start eating eggs, nuts fruits some veggies (raw) and I do like milk whole fat, but I have to have it as chocolate milk, I really am trying to stay away from sugar, but seen as I'm limiting my sugar intake that chocolate milk should be ok.

I'm going to start doing some minor exercise with a large ball and rubber bands and sit ups.

I know this is the wrong route to go, but it's better than not taking anything at all. Thanks for the advice. I know it can be done.

Wow, that really sucks. I wish I could offer some more helpful recommendations, but given how significant an impact gastroparesis has, it's way beyond my scope of knowledge.

Your last point there is very true. Something's better than nothing.

Good luck with everything. I mean that.

Most certainly is. All I care about is not losing muscle mass, that's why protein shakes I'm sure is ideal. I have frozen blueberries in the freezer. Have you heard of anyone putting blueberries in the chocolate shakes. I know blueberries are beneficial and would like to use them up.

I would bet that blueberries in the shakes would be very good. I have added other fruits to the shakes and it really works out well.

Hi Bill,
Some tips for you to lose weight.
Break your meals in 5 small meals including snacks,
Increase your water intake,
Prefer raw food over processed food,
Avoid beverages, soda and diet soda,
Drink green tea 2/3 times a day,
Do start some exercise or physical activity.

Hi Bill, not sure if you've tried these but probiotics and glutamine help stomach and bowel disorders. Shakes contain glutamine building blocks so are your symptoms altered when taking this? I dont have first hand experience of gastroparesis with my clients but it would sound like there may be a chance it would respond.

Hey Bill, I just want to let you know that if you are planning to lose that much weight then you should do it over a longer period of time. If you lose 100 pounds quickly you will have A LOT of excess skin hanging from you and that will NOT look good. By loosing weight at a slower pace you can at least minimize this effect if not eliminate it all together. As for loosing weight, I highly recommend counting your daily calories and having a deficit of 500 calories every day. If you do this I'm sure that you will see slow but progressive weight loss.

Hi billbernard,
Exercise is must to lose and maintain weight so do start exercise or sport. Add vegetables and fruits more in your diet meals and increase water intake. Drink green tea and avoid soda and beverages.

Hi Bill,

Many people actually care about you here. You just have to focus and stay disciplined in your diet and every day activities. You will be sacrificing a lot of your time from now on. Every idle time you have, use it to walk around. You can start a program of some sort - but you have to get expert advice for it. Try to point out the tips in this forum that you can do for now. In the long run, experts should give you the best advice on how to handle your case.

Take care there and don't panic. All goes well if you wish it and do it well.

I'd say at least for the beginning it might be a better idea not to set such a huge weight loss goal, particularly if you're just trying to lose it by running. Odds are even if you manage to do it, it'll be very hard to maintain that weight loss because it may be hard to maintain that lifestyle. Making sensible, healthy improvements in your habits (subbing out the occasional meal for a protein shake is one, or deciding to go on three or four good walks every week) will lead to better long-term weight loss than going on some kind of crash diet/fitness regime.

Hey Bill

You need to include some food items in your diet like, Cucumber, onion, strawberries, carrots, eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, lettuce. These food items are rich in vitamins, mineral etc and with very less calories. These also helps in burning your fat.

Try these food items and see results after few weeks .

Good Luck

Whey protein is good but have you tried hemp protein? Hemp protein is high in protein and also has omega fatty oils in it as well which is good for a lot of things.

Here is an article I found on a google search that could be helpful. To find more just search what I did “gastroparesis safe foods.”

With weight loss goals you should have realistic goals. Like goldfish said a 100 pound weight loss goal should be a 2 year goal instead of 1. Pace yourself with weight loss, you won’t always lose the same amount of weight every single month and every single week.

In regards to exercise, it is a must to help you lose weight especially cardio. Start off just walking, focus on getting your heart rate up. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. I know a guy that did 5 rounds of P90X and lost over 100 pounds. He didn’t lose those 100 pounds in the first round of P90X. Look him up on youtube he might be an inspiration to you, his name is Tommy Mygrant.

Hope this helps.
