I'm on the road to a better way of life!

Hello, everybody! I really, really need some good motivation so that I stick to a diet and exercise plan. Working 40+ hours a week at a semi-fast-food restaurant leaves me mentally and physically exhausted, and it's made my outside life practically non-existant. I've recently moved into my own apartment, and I've discovered the fact of life that food is expensive--and healthy foods are even moreso.

Thus, I need help! I'm hoping that, by joining a forum and posting a picture diary, I'll find the motivation to wake up early before work and go out for a brisk walk and/or jog, eat healthier any way that I can, and lose weight the healthy way! Having online weightloss buddies is surely a start to a better way of life! ^_^

I think that for me, the motivation just came one day when I decided I'd had enough, didn't want to continue on the path I was on, and decided it was time to stop making excuses for why I couldn't/didn't lose weight and just make myself exercise and eat right. I think I told myself I didn't have a choice--I was going to do it, and that was the end of it. It worked very well..lol.

One thing I learned is that I never tell myself I can't eat certain foods such as carbs, sweets, etc. I just eat them in moderation. Otherwise I tend to want what I can't have--if I said no carbs I'd crave them to no end. But if I allow myself to eat them in moderation, I tend not to crave them so much.

Anyway, I wish you the best, and remember not to beat yourself up if you have a bad day here and there. Just remember to get right back on the horse and try not to make a bad habit of falling off. :)

Thanks so much for the encouragement! :) I've already looked into your before/after stories, and I must say that you truly are an inspiring individual!

Welcome Krissy!

Hi Krissy!

I'd tried diets many times but to no avail. They'd leave me too hungry or not feeling well, or just plain didn’t work. Finally, about 14 years ago my motivation changed. I was not longer simply wanting to weigh less. I wanted to feel better, too. I was 100 pounds overweight, weighing the mid 200's, and feeling the negative effects of my excess weight. I'd get tired and winded just walking upstairs in my house, or carrying the groceries in from the car. I began studying all I could about nutrition and a little bit about exercise, too. Also around this time, my Dad passed away from Alzheimer’s and colon cancer. In hindsight, his passing was the wake-up call that spurred me on to take my obesity seriously. I knew I had to change the direction I was headed in. I was 42 at the time. I devised a plan for myself, based on my reading. It was focused on maintaining optimal cardiovascular health and controlling my blood sugar at a low level (for many years I'd been having daily hypoglycemic episodes, even though my fasting glucose blood tests were always in the normal range; the doctor I had back then would tell me to deal with it by eating candy...). I didn't realize at first, but later I learned that the plan (eating plan and exercise) I had devised for myself was basically the Zone diet and life style. My weight began dropping almost effortlessly, a pound or two a week. (You can read more by looking up my past posts.)

When I kept losing and feeling better with each week that went by, this itself became my motivation. It remains my motivation today. Because of my healthier weight, and healthy eating and life style habits, I was able to get off the two high blood pressure meds I'd been on for many years. I haven't needed any since. I've maintained my weight loss for the past 13 years.

Good luck to you!

Wow! That's great news, Sue! I'm so happy for you!! I know that I'm on the road to obesity, which is a big part of my motivation. I look back over the past few years, and I realize that I just keep getting a little bigger each year. Sure, I'm still healthy (I'm just outside my healthy weight range of 147, since I'm about 156), but I know that I won't be for long. Once I get into my later twenties and early thirties, my metabolism will just get slower and slower, and I can already foresee the pattern towards obesity. I also have low blood sugar, which makes eating less very difficult for me since I get shaky/sick after not eating for just a few hours. Thus, I need to just have a lot of low-fat healthy foods around that I can guiltlessly snack on throughout the day in between meals. My goal weight is 125, but since I know that pounds don't mean everything, I'm mainly going to focus on just getting smaller. My pants' size will tell me more than a scale ever could! (I'm naturally muscular, and muscle weighs more than fat, etc.)

Thanks again!!! This site is great. ^_^

Hi krissy

You're welcome krissy! I can so relate to the shaky low blood sugar feelings, as write in my previous post. It's such a relief to be totally free of them. You might really like the Zone. The basis of the eating plan revolves around eating to control your blood sugar levels so that you avoid the spikes and drops. It takes only a few days to gain control of your blood sugar, and when you do lots of positive changes take place. You begin burning your excess stored body fat, you lower inflammation levels in your body, you gain mental clarity, and you have more energy.

Good luck!

Whoa! Burning extra inflammation levels? I didn't know that low blood sugar caused that! Perhaps that's why my joints feel so inflamed a lot of the time, for no good reason. I'll have to look into this Zone diet. ^_^ Thanks again!

Excess Body Fat and Inflammation

You're welcome!

Yes, excess stored body fat produces inflammation throughout your body and organs.

If you're interested in learing more, I'd highly suggest you read "Toxic Fat", the latest book Dr. Barry Sears the inventor of the Zone. The way to halt this progresion toward increased inflammation and chronic disease is surprisingly easy. The Zone's a very sensible and satisfying diet and lifestyle.

I got curious and googled zone diet reviews. I suggest you do the same. :)
