I'm on Paxil = Major weight gain...

I used to be very slim until I started taking Paxil. I'll have to be on it forever which is fine because I do need it.

I gained a lot of weight though... over 55lbs... Some of it was the medication, some of it was just me, giving up and telling myself: "Well, if I'm going to gain it anyway... Might as well eat whatever I want."

But I decided that's not an option anymore. I need to lose the weight for health reasons as well as personal reasons.

Is there anyone else here who takes it and as a result, had a big weight gain?

I read to day that to reverse the effect of the ingredient that makes you gain weight, taking Omega3 and Vitamin E helps a lot.

Has anyone heard about this before? Today I went and bought bottles of each. It can't be bad for me anyway so I fugured why not...

Paxil is a nasty drug. I took it for a few weeks, then when I stopped I went into horrible withdrawals from it. Absolutely disgusting. I would look for an alternative like zoloft or something. I haven't taken an antidepressant in years, but now I take an anxiety med in the same class called buspar. Works great.

Well, try it with me! Buy Omega3 and Vitamin E. It is suppoosed to help a lot. And it can't be bad for you so...

Let's do this together!

It may help to talk to the doctor about the weight gain. There's tons of antidepressants out there and they all work differently for different ppl.

I was on Paxil for a couple years. Never had luck with the stuff, and have heard of it giving others trouble (there's supposed to be some big class action lawsuit or something). It made me gain lots of weight and turned me into a spacy zombie.

I think Paxil is one of those drugs that doesn't agree with some people but can be an absolute wonder drug for others. I have a friend who was so anxious and depressed she could barely function. Two years ago she started taking Paxil and she's been doing great ever since; she has started and kept a great job, feels good and sleeps well. She hasn't gained any weight either but that's another thing that varies from person to person.

I know someone else who took Zyprexa and gained 60 pounds, which is the average gain per year for that medication. He then switched to Abilify and lost most of that, although it's still a struggle for him.

Weight gain, with these psychiatric medications, is a tough side effect to deal with because, it's thought that the components that block brain nerves from absorbing excess neurotransmitters, also block the messages that tell us we're full.

One thing I firmly believe is that keeping our mental health stable and balanced is far more important than our weight.
You can deal with that minor weight gain, Virgule! I know you can!

Paxil is doing wonders for me. I used to be aggressive, depressed, not functional. Now, I feel absolutely amazing, happy, energetic, I feel like I am the kind of person I always wanted to be. Actually, when I am quiet, people wonder if I am okay! lol!!!

i went from 165 to 220 in a few months on paxil, then i changed over to celexa and was down to around 200, now im off everything (been about a month!) and i just started diet and exercise to try to get back down to 180 or so, that stuff sucks i wish you luck! and check out celexa same thing with lessweight gain

I'm on 20mg of Paxil and been on it for 8 weeks for Anxiety/Panic Attacks and on 1 mg of Xanax. I went from 431 to 390-392 but I do count my calorie intake, sat fat, total fat, sodium, and chosterol. It finally started helping me after 7 weeks but I still have some episodes at least 4-5 times a week. I might need to up my dosage or switch to zoloft or both. But I haven't gain any weight from it.

I'm really happy to hear Paxil is working for you guys, and I hope it keeps on working.

It did great by me for a year and a half, but started causing issues after that (memory loss, exhaustion, severe spaciness, etc...). Meds are a godsend (and a necessity) for a lot of people, but if your meds give you any weird symptoms you aren't comfortable with, please don't be afraid to be assertive with your doctor about switching brands (or even weaning off them--if possible).

Sometimes you have to be really pushy, too, as some doctors aren't very good listeners (especially when they are overworked). Even though I told my doctor about the problems I was experiencing, he kept upping the dosages til I had a seizure while driving on a highway. I lost my ability to memorize phone numbers and addresses for years. I would not wish that on anyone!

I was on Nuzac (prozac generic) for 2 years and I gained 23 pounds (10 Kgs)

I am more depressed now because I have this extra 23 pounds I need to get rid of. It is not easy, sometimes I get so desperate but there is no miracle.

I stopped the meds this January 2006 and I lost a few kilos but I need to loose more and it is difficult.

I have been searching the web ever since.... I found this website

It has info on losing weight after anti depressants.

At the moment, I am taking:

Am - 2 x Omega 3 & 1 CLA
Noon - 2 x Omega 3 & 1 CLA
3.30pm - 1 CLA

Been 2 weeks now and I will carry on until something drastic happens..... my pants feel loose, maybe that is a good sign.

I also starting drinking 3 Puh Erh tea a day. It is really difficult for me to excercise, I come home late and then to drive to the gym is challenging
