I'm New - Unrealistic Goal?

Hi, I'm new. I'm here because have gained way too much weight since graduating from high school 6 years ago. I didn't gain it right away, but gradually. Now, I find myself 100 lbs. heavier than I used to be. I just calculated my BMI - it's 36.9. Wow. I know it's probably an unrealistic goal, but I want to try to loose the majority of this weight in the next 6 months. See, I'm going to be a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding, and not only do I want to look good for the event, but it gives me some motivation, to have a specific reason and an event to loose the weight for. Her wedding is in December, so that gives me 6 months. I'm thinking that maybe I can actually accomplish this - I was always naturally skinny. I've just become much less active and much more of a binge eater. And my cholesterol has been high for a few years now - pretty sad for someone in their twenties. See, I was actually attending another wedding tonight, and due to other medical conditions I have, I had taken the drug mostly prescribed for narcolepsy, Nuvigil. Well, since I know that it wears off for me, I also took a caffeine pill, which I normally wouldn't take the two together. Well, it must have curbed my appetite, because I barely at anything during the cocktail hour, and ate mostly veggies at dinner. And, being quite aware of my weight at a wedding where everyone seems to be so pretty and thin, I thought - "I don't mind feeling this way. Eating less feels nice in a certain way. I think I'll keep this up." Now, it's many hours later and my tummy is rumbling, but I shall not give in. I already had dinner. Am I setting an unrealistic goal, or is it reasonable to say that since I was always thin before and have a small frame, it might be possible?

Hi Kailur,

I'm no expert but in my opinion losing 100 lbs is very possible. You've made a big first step by coming onto this forum because there is so much information. More importantly there are lots of good people who can help and advise you.

I would have a good look around the site and read some of the introductory articles, about the basics behind weight loss, exercise, nutrition, etc.

The simplest fact about weight loss is that you will loss weight if you burn off more calories than you eat.

You've got six months and your cousins wedding is the goal you have in mind. This sounds to me like a really great opportunity for you. You've got plenty of time to go on a really healthy diet, not some horrible fad diet. With a good plan and the discipline to carry it through you should lose you weight, look great but more importanly be more healthy.

What you need to do in the next couple of days is work out how many calories you should be eating everyday to achieve the weight loss you need. I would have thought about 1400 calories would be about right. Then plan how you will spread these calories out over the day. Also, you should think about what exercise you want to do. Walking is great exercise, so try walking an hour a day. (If you think it sounds boring then download some audio books onto your ipod!)

Having a routine is very important for me. So much so that I basically eat exactly the same food every day. You don't have to go this far of course.

Be careful about not starting you diet in too quick a manner, skipping meals or things like that. It will leave you drained of energy and you will lose motivation and start to eat too much of the wrong things. You've got 6 months to lose the weight so take it slowly and steadily.

I hope this gives you something to think about.

all the best with it

Hello,

I just wanted to add that there's roughly 25 weeks until the end of November (6 months from now) so losing a healthy maximum of 2 lbs a week (and not everyone manages to lose that amount) would mean you could lose a maximum of 50lbs. Plus some water weight you might be carrying this could be up to 60lbs at the very most.

Basically, to lose 100lbs in that time you would have to go to extremes in your diet and exercise which is completely unadvisable!

So maybe you should adjust your goal a little. Losing 40-50 lbs would still be an amazing start on your journey and I think would make a marked difference in your appearance in time for the wedding.

I suggest you read the stickies (particularly those in the on topic, nutrition and exercise forums) to get an idea of how you can lose the weight the healthy way :)

Good luck, Holly

^^^^I agree that 100lbs weight loss in that amount of time is not healthy but that 50 -60 is completely doable. You will still feel and look great with that much weight loss and the compliments you will get at the wedding will spur you on to lose the rest. It really isn't worth it to lose it too quickly as you are more likely to put it all back on again. Believe me I know this after years of experience at crash dieting.
Good luck and set small goals as you go along so as not to get overwhelmed by how much you need to lose.
