I'm new to the boards and I need advice

hello all!! My name is Sammy, I'm 23 years old and I live in Northern New Jersey. I'm about 250 pounds 5'8" and I'm looking to lose weight for looks and health reasons. I found these boards today on google and this is exactly what I have been looking for!

anyway, I'm looking to lose weight first (again, I'm about 250lbs) for health reasons (#1 I have high cholesterol) and then eventually bulk up a little bit. so I'm looking for a little help, guidance and maybe some support. Can someone give me some good pointers on trying to lose weight? Maybe a good workout routine and diet plan? I've been trying to watch what I eat and drink (I've stopped drinking soda...which is why I think I'm overweight) so that's a start but I want more. I want to make this a lifetime thing, not a "I want to lose 50 lbs and then I'm done." I want to be able to walk up a flight of stairs again and not be out of breathe. LOL!

 I guess I'm just looking for some help...

You have come to the right place !

First off, check this thread :

This has a good beginning weight training workout in it.

Fat loss is a function of raising your metabolism, through proper eating, weight training, and cardiovascular exercise, you can attain your goals.

Try to consume 2200-2500 calories daily, maintaining a good exercise regimine. Weight train 4 times a week with the program I recommended, and try to perform at least 30 minutes of cardio 4 times a week. At first, you may want to do 20 minutes of cardio, adding 5 minutes every other week until you work up to 45 minutes.

that link was great!! thanks for the tip! I already signed up for the fitday program and that is an awesome program!!! thanks!!

one other thing i should add. any workouts that I do, have to be outside workouts because I can not afford to go to a gym or fitness center right now...

well, I signed up for the fitday.com prgram and I'm loving it! I was just going to use a Excel spreadsheet but this is by far much more spohiscated! Thanks!

I'll do a google search now and see what I can do. thanks for the info!!

3 miles per day of running? That might be too much. At your weight, try running every other day. 3 miles is fine if that is a good distance for you. Eventually (as AEvans said), you will want to work up to 45 minutes of cardio (i.e. running).

Go here for a write-up on training core muscles:

Don't forget to drink lots of water (1 to 1.5 gallons per day).

Good luck and keep us posted of your progress!

I'm only doing fast walking not running the 3 miles (yet). Good point on the water because I've haven't been drinking much water but I'll start on that right away (like right now. LOL!)

I just finished reading that link and I have some of my own questions now:

other than Abs what other cardio exercises do you think I should do?

Anything that brings your heart rate up, bicycling, walking, jogging, jumping rope, elliptical trainers, stair steppers.

ok, that sounds good!

Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm new to all of this and I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right

The only dumb question in this type of endeavour is the one you don't ask, and thats the answer you usually need to get results. Ask away :D

Where can you find leather pants for mice??? (How is that for a dumb question Allen :D )

Sammy...You sound like you have the right frame of mind for all this. Always keep researching and you will do yourself a world of good. You can't get too much info in the noggin. Esspecially me...I have a big noggin. :D

LOL! i'm really wanting to shed these pounds because its embarrasing. LOL!

but thanks, that made me feel a lot better!
