I'm kind-of skeptical.

Well, I just joined. My name's Starlett, by the way. I'm fifteen years old, and I live in Georgia. I joined this forum because I've been overweight since I was eight years old. I'm 5'3; I currently weigh somewhere between 230 and 245 lbs, and I'm incredibly unhappy with it.

I live with my parents-- well, my aunt and uncle, rather-- and I don't buy my own food. I've asked them to try and buy healthier things in the past, but they love junk food, so I'm powerless in that area.

I was hoping for some advice here.

I think that I should stop drinking soda and start drinking water, cut back on my food consumption, and start exercising...

But I don't know where else to begin.

I've always wanted to lose weight because I loathe my body, but I have no idea how to do so. Every time I try to lose weight, I give up in a short period of time.

Basically, I need help desperately.

You've done the right thing...

by reaching out for help. You will find a lot of support, information, and encouragement here.

Your suggestions are where you can start. I would start by cutting down on the soda. Slowly get to the point where you are cutting it out altogether and replacing it with water.

And you are correct on cutting back on what you are eating. Like you said, you don't make the decisions about purchasing the food. However, maybe if you make the suggestion that you would like to fix something for dinner, maybe they might get the ingredients for you. With the colder weather starting to get here, you might could make a pot of stew or chili. Maybe you can get your aunt and uncle to slowly start eating healthier.

Also, if you can get in a 30 minute to an hour walk, that will help as well. If you have access to a dvd player, there is an excellent "walking workout" dvd by Leslie Sansone that is available. You probably can check out your local library to see if they have it there to check out.

These are just my observations. Good luck on your journey. Ask plenty of questions as there are plenty of people to help you on your way.

Me and my friends used to do this but it was alot of fun

Get some foam practice swords (most exercise stories have them) get two, one for you and one for a friend, and proceed to play "whack a mole" against eachother; alot of fun and its good exercise

You've hit the nail on the head. Thats where you begin. Start doing some form of exercise, like walking somewhere every day, or just getting out and burning some calories. Thats how I started, and these days I run close to 5km every day. Its all about building up and staying consistent.

Are you involved in some form of a sport?
Good luck and stay strong!

You've definetly got the right idea. It's hard when you aren't in control of what comes into your kitchen cupboards, but at least you know that you've got to stay away from that junk.
Just don't try too much at once, that'll lead to giving up in a short time period. Just make little changes, one at a time. It's great that you're aware and wanting to do something- changes that you make now will affect your quality of life forever!
Good Luck!

Hey!!! Welcome to the forum...you can do this!

Let's think about the food issue. What do you have for breakfast? Can you buy the salads in the schools cafeteria? If you can't control the dinner menu maybe you could control the lunch and breakfast...and that'd be a great start. Maybe you can also look into joining a sport?

Gotta go!

Thats exactly what I did and it has worked great for me. Don't try to make things too complicated in the beginning, you can and will learn as you go, I sure have.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions and support!

PK, I actually already have a few of Leslie Sansone's videos. They're called Walk Away the Pounds. One is the one mile walk, one is walking and kicking, and the other is light walking and jogging. One of the videos is missing, though, I'm not sure which. When I tried to lose weight before, I'd use them, because I was convinced that I was too embarrassed to go outside and walk around my neighborhood. Now I'm over that fear, though.

I think that I'll use the videos once or twice a week. My ticker is indicating how many laps I've walked around my neighborhood. I'm going to go for a walk in a few minutes and see how many laps I can make. I'm aiming for three or four, but it will be tough.

I'll count walking with a Leslie Sansone's video one or two laps also, I suppose.

Again, thank you everyone! I think that by looking at other peoples' efforts and gaining support here, I might be able to actually make some progress.

Right now I'm not going to focus on weight loss so much as getting into some better habits. One leads to the other, right? ;)

You are exactly right

It is like the riddle of how you eat an elephant. You eat an elephant one bite at a time. Start making small changes in your diet and exercise. Don't go all out and make an abrupt change. Generally, that leads somebody to quitting and going back to where they were before.

Keep on keeping on!!!

Hi there, welcome. :)

I agree with everyone else that you have the right idea. Exercise is the most important thing, you can eat unhealthy food and still lose weight if you're exercising. I'm not saying that you shouldn't eat healthy, you really should, it helps a lot, but if you don't have the resources then just cut back. Make sure you count your calories and make sure you're in range.

You're getting a good start by cutting back your habits.

Also, you're 15, do you think you'd have time to get a part-time job somewhere? Maybe babysit or something? Maybe tha would help you to buy your own food.

Good luck.

I'd really like to get a job, but the facts are that I really can't.

I have no means of transportation as my parents work all weekdays, from about 7 or 8 in the morning to who-knows-when at night. (Usually 5:00 P.M. at earliest.)

They're off on the weekends, but I don't think I can find a job where I'm able to work just the weekends.
