I'm debating giving this a shot

Since september I've gone from 225 to 185 (I'm 5'11") through eating better, and running almost every day. Currently I run five miles per day, five days a week (usually Su, M, T, W, F).

My weight loss seems to have slowed down however, so I'm thinking about giving this a try. Its just hard to believe that twenty minutes of this HIIT will burn the same amount of calories as my 45 minute five mile run.

And one other thing about the HIIT, is the best way to do this on a treadmill? I like running outside infinitely better than being inside on a treadmill. The only time I use a treadmill is when theres a thunderstorm outside or something.

Yes!!!

Run outside cos its safer to control your own speed.

unfortunatly the closer we get to our goals, then more effort, will power and dedication it takes.

Good luck

The value of exercise is not how many calories you burn while doing it, its how many additional calories your body burns after the exercise than it would have burned if you had not done the exercise. When you do SS (steady state) Cardio or LSR (long slow run) your body only burns an elevated level of calories during the exercise and for a hour or 2 after. In fact the more fit you are the fewer calories you burn after the exercise session. After a proper HIIT session you burn an elevated number of calories for up to 48 hours, so even though you burn less calories during a 20 minute HIIT session than a 5 mile run, the total number of additional calories burned after the HIIT session greatly exceeds the calories burned after the SS Cardio session.

Also long duration exercise session tends to signal the body to store fat to be ready to fuel the next long duration exercise session, so a 20 minute HIIT session avoids that.

I would definately do HIIT running outdoors if possible. It is really hard to transition from a slow pace to a 100% sprint and back on a treadmill, and it is also very difficult to do a 100% sprint on a treadmill without risk of falling!

Okay so since I'm in decent running shape already, what level should I start off with? (I'm going by the post in the sticky thread in this forum).

"advanced - sprint, run
warm up
r-3min
s-1min
r-2min
s-1min
r-1min....................continue 1min run, 1min sprint for 20min."

Yeah looks like I should probably do no more than the intermediate

And what should I do for the warmup? Does it mean warmup with running, or is a warmup doing some pushups and situps?

Well I just did the intermediate one (outside), run 2, sprint 1, walk 1 sprint 1 etc... for 20 minutes total.

Somebody please euthanize me.
