I'm a newb, help please!

Well, I'll start off by introducing myself, I'm 17, I am in my senior year of high school and I have a spare every first block of the day monday to friday, and a spare in the second block every second day.

I thought I would start training, not so much to impress my friends/ladies, but to improve my personal health. My family is plagued with obesity and diabetes. Luckily I have alluded that fate for the last 17 years, but I've started to gain some weight around my waist, as I sit playing video games all day and eating horrible foods. I would say I'm about 6'0"-6'1" 170-185lbs.

Being that I'm a complete newb at training/weight lifting, I thought I would seek some online advice before injuring my back lifting without proper form. My diet is limited to what my dad buys for the family, it's about 80% unhealthy (greasy frozen microwavables) and about 20% healthier alternatives, like fruits, lean meats, vegetables and dairy products. I can always request items, but I can't be eating more than my share of the expensive food. Rather than request you nice people to make me a diet, I thought it would be more polite to ask for links, but if you feel differently, then be my guest. I've looked myself, but mostly I've found self-help crap that requires supplements and junk like that (by the way, no supplements please :>).

My other concern is a plan/routine, I want to make sure that I have a balanced workout, upper and lower body. I have no problem using free weights or machines. My second concern regarding routine is proper form. I know I am asking a lot, but I'm hoping you guys/gals will help me out.

Hey bro,

Yep, you are asking a lot! hehe. I'll help you as much as I can here.

You really need to watch what you eat if you dont want to gain weight (fat). If you continue eating what you are (80% greasy unhealthy food) it is going to be a downhill spiral from here. It sounds like your family eating habits may contribute quite considerably to the history of obesity your family has.

Well here's a saying for you... if you do what you've always done you'll get what you've always gotten!! In other words, keep doing what your family is doing, and you'll be just like them! So change it now.

You can continue eating what your dad buys, but start eating less portions. You wont gain weight if you eat the same amount of calories you burn up in a day, regardless of if you eat good foods or bad foods. I would not recommend this approach tho, and if I were you I would start learning about good eating habits. You will feel a hell of a lot better, and mix that with fitness, you'll multiply that feeling ten fold!

I have a heap of information on my website regarding food. It mainly has info on how to lose fad, but it can still be used to as a guide to good eating and has info on working out your calories etc.

In regards to training, you can join a gym, or start playing a sport of your choice. Just get off your butt and play less video games! Generally (not sure in your neck of the woods) gyms have instructors that can show you good exercises with good form. Impossible to do on this forum!

In your post you have basically asked someone to tell you step by step how to completely change your life. Hard thing to do on a forum. Change your eating habits, get active, join a gym/spoting club. Dont keep doin what you are doing. By the sound of it you know you are going down the road to living on the unhealthier side of things.

Hope this helps

Regards,

Anthony

I have placed some links in on my reply above. I have justjoined this forum and not sure of proper protocol/ettiquitte. Please let me know if I am out of line, I would like to respect rules and regs of this forum.

I think the easiest thing to do would be try to convince your family that what your trying to do can benifit everyone. If you can convince your parents that all of you should try to exercise and eat healthy it will make it easier for you. Show them that your seriouse about leading a clean, healthy life.

Obesity and Diabetes is not a problem with your family. Bad habits are a problem with your family. Bad habits lead to the health problems. Education and motivation are key to a healthy lifestyle.

Are there alot of chips and snack cakes (e.g. little debbie, hostess, ect) in your house? Try to just get your parents to buy 1 box and 1 bag of the before mentioned. Get yogurt, cans of tuna, fresh fruit, nuts, ect for snacks. That will make eating poorly more dificult.

Good luck with the lifestyle change, many people here have done it, incliuding myself, and the begining is the hardest part of breaking old habits. Temptation is evil, support is golden.
