If trends continue, we’ll all be fat in 40 years

Researchers: By 2048, every American could be at least slightly overweight
updated 12:34 p.m. MT, Wed., Aug. 6, 2008
NEW YORK - If the trends of the past three decades continue, it’s possible that every American adult could be overweight 40 years from now, a government-funded study projects.

The figure might sound alarming, or impossible, but researchers say that even if the actual rate never reaches the 100-percent mark, any upward movement is worrying; two-thirds of the population is already overweight.

“Genetically and physiologically, it should be impossible” for all U.S. adults to become overweight, said Dr. Lan Liang of the federal government’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, one of the researchers on the study.
However, she told Reuters Health, the data suggest that if the trends of the past 30 years persist, “that is the direction we’re going.”

Already, she and her colleagues point out, some groups of U.S. adults have extremely high rates of overweight and obesity; among African- American women, for instance, 78 percent are currently overweight or obese.

A ‘wake-up call’?
The new projections, published in the journal Obesity, are based on government survey data collected between the 1970s and 2004.

If the trends of those years continue, the researchers estimate that 86 percent of American adults will be overweight by 2030, with an obesity rate of 51 percent. By 2048, all U.S. adults could be at least mildly overweight.

Weight problems will be most acute among African-Americans and Mexican- Americans, the study projects. All black women could be overweight by 2034, according to the researchers, as could more than 90 percent of Mexican-American men.

All of this rests on the “big assumption” that the trends of recent decades will march on unabated, Liang acknowledged.

“This is really intended as a wake-up call to show what could happen if nothing changes,” she said.

Waistlines aren’t the only thing poised to balloon in the future, according to Liang and her colleagues. They estimate that the healthcare costs directly related to excess pounds will double each decade, reaching $957 billion in 2030 — accounting for one of every six healthcare dollars spent in the U.S.
Those financial projections are based on Census data and published estimates of the current healthcare costs attributed to excess weight — and they are probably a “huge underestimate” of what the actual costs will be, Liang said.

The findings highlight a need for widespread efforts to improve Americans’ lifestyles and keep their weight in check, according to the researchers. Simply telling people to eat less and exercise more is not enough, Liang noted.

Broader social changes are needed as well, she said -- such as making communities more pedestrian-friendly so that people can walk regularly, or getting the food industry to offer healthier, calorie-conscious choices.

“It really needs to be more than an individual effort,” Liang said. “It needs to be a societal effort.”

This is alarming. I know a lot will change between here and then, I don't know what but this has too.

I know this is just my ignorant opinion here but I really think that big companys need to start changing the food and drinks they offer people. It's the people's fault but people are stupid. I think we need to get rid of all high calorie and sugar soda and drinks and just sell the diet brand as the signature brand. Coke zero is delicious...

But all in all... All we as individuals can do is decide for ourselves whether WE want to be fat or not. Those statistics do not decide your fate, so go out and exercise and be yourself and if everyone around you gets fatter then.... you'll look better by comparison :D

Take a look around -the obesity problem is everywhere...

not limited to the US... the rest of the world is catching up...
I realize this, but I'd still rather live in one of the numerous places where it's not nearly as bad..

i think by far western countries such as america and canada have a higher obesity rate than other countries. when i grew up in europe (Romania) food was so expensive that one can only afford the necessities. so... the result? almost everyone was fit! when i came to canada is when i packed on the pounds and ballooned to 180! i was 12 at the time! but here, food is so cheap, readily available, and as new to this thing my families ignorance to the harms of this type of food (because this wasnt an issue previously) had caused us all to pack on a tremendous amount of weight.

If it's dying of being overweight or dying of starvation I think I pick the first one and stay in America =P
But really, This is one of those things that makes me GLAD that I actually learned early on while all my friends ate pizza and chips (as well as I did then) I now realize I cannot do that..and it will catch up with 90% of them eventually..and since I changed my lifestyle NOW instead of waiting, I will have more time in being healthy than being unhealthy..so HORRAY FOR SLOW METABOLISMS AND GENETICS!! hahaha :jump:

Another thought I've always had also is
After the depression, I think America ate and ate and ate because they were so used to not having it..so it created and excess of storing up and eating a lot because the possibility of another depression..and for the fact that you have the food now it's somethign you cherish and finally can have whenever you want? But, I know it's been getting worse since the 70's but has it gotten worse since the 30's also? I don't know..just a thought I guess. haha

Ok, this study is interesting, but didn't we all know that America is getting fatter? Did the government really need to spend money to come up with exact dates for when we will all be fatties? Maybe they should have used the money to fund public gyms or educational programs about obesity.

I know, I know, I'll go back to my corner now...

Your right.. I know I'd love to live in a communist country where people are starving. Sounds like a great alternative to being fat...

:patriot:

anywho I don't know if I believe this. There is always going to be overweight people but I don't believe that everyone will be obese. There will always be supermodels and young hollywood that little girls will look up too.........just saying

I also think more and more people are learning to eat healthy and weightloss is a multi million dollar industry.

Its starts will the kids. train your children up well and it will be fine. Teach them not to buy candy from the machines at school, and to go outside and play and all will be well in 40 years..........

btw way my son is drinking skim milk and eating a yogurt right now. I wont let him get big like I did. I was overweight at 2 yrs old.

Just my .02 and all but how old is your son?
I doubt it is whole milk that is causing the obesity problem in children, which I wholeheartedly agee BTW, but if his diet is balanced and he gets exercise there should be no reason a growing boy shouldnt be drinking 2% or higher fat milk.

I agree with the societal effort. And you know what keeps a population fighting fit? War.

All?hu Akbar! :flame:

Or, y'know, people could make their own choices. I'll just move to wherever I don't have to pay all of their outrageous medical bills and socialist taxes and it doesn't take me 3 hours to purchase 5 items from CostCo because those roly-poly aliens from The Fifth Element are clogging up all the aisles.

Come to think, I'll prolly have to start my own country. There will be free protein pudding for anyone who wants to come with me!

I dont think I've had a full sugar soda in over 30 years... Growing up _ Tab was the drink of choice -Coke or Pepsi were never around...

I've said this quite often.. i got to almost 400lbs NEVER eating fast food or fried food or candy or cakes or anything anyone would consider unhealthy -i got to almost 400lbs -eating healthy foods... Understanding portion control was my problem... It wasn't what I ate but how much...

there are plenty of people who drink full sugar sodas and don't have weight issues...

We have had to go ahead to take him off whole milk from our pediatrician. He is almost 2. My hubby and I only drink skim and grew up on it. We were buying whole and skim. Im glad we don't have to buy both kinds anymore with the cost of milk! He doesnt get as much exercise as I'd like but its so freaking hot out. They have had heat advisorys for a while now. I used to puke when I'd get overheated when I was a kid. We are both really really pale(im freakled and I have red hair) so I have to watch the sun as well. I can't wait until fall so we can get the bikes out.

Since I'm new hear I haven't heard you say this before ;) But this is an excellent point and goes along with my way of thinking also. I think the problem is not what's available - because come on - we Americans want ALL the options - we want to be able to choose right? I don't want the government telling me that I can't eat a piece of cake for goodness sakes! I think people have a completely distorted picture of the amount of food they need. Portion control is essential for maintaining a healthy weight. And variety is the spice of life - deprivation leads to things being out of balance and is impossible to sustain as a lifestyle. IMO :)

Oh yes, that's it, the only two types of countries are super fat-ass countries and communist starving countries. Uh-huh. Nothing that doesn't conform to either of those. Yup. O=

Not surprising, given the way our foods are processed to death, have ungodly amounts of high fructose corn syrup added to them, and insane amounts of sodium. Add to that the fast food chains supersizing everything, and portion control flying out the window (hell, its in bloody ORBIT!). Eat a farmer's breakfast and don't do a farmer's workload... yeah you are going to pack it on!

Society has convenienced itself into lardom with all the processed crap out there. To hell with nutrition, cheap manufacturing and shelf life are what's important.

I'll join you Focus in your new country with free protein pudding!!! Does that stuff actually exist, and does it taste ok? I've never had it before:p

I just want to say I don't think food is that cheap anymore - in Canada anyways. Everything seems to be jacking up in price, and I only hope that the unhealthy stuff (such as cookies and chips) quadruples because that definitely would help keep people away from it. I know it helps when I'm in the grocery store to make healthier choices!!

Oh hai thar, kitten. Long time no see. ^_^

Protein pudding = protein "shake" minus half'ish of the water. ;) And it's delicious, occasionally. Not really a big fan of the thickness. 1 serving chocolate protein + 1 serving banana protein + 4 ice cubes + 1'ish cup water = banana cream pie tasting pudding. Depends on whether you're using whey or casein, somewhat, but thereabouts.
