Ideas

Hey Guys,

I've been lurking around a bit and decided to finally post.

Was just wondering if I could get some advice to point me in the right area.

To start of, I'm 21 years old - 5'10'' 185lbs. Most of which is flab around the gut and back - nothing too bad, but definitely not in shape. Two years ago I was 145lbs, I then got a desk job and started eating the wrong food. I managed to get back on track before it got too bad, but my nicely toned body has now turned to flab.

I've changed my diet - I'm now eating a lot of fruit and veg, hardly any meat, but a lot of Tuna. Basically the only exercise I get is the 4 mile walk to work.

I've started with 20 push ups / 20 sit ups and double it every night and do that every week. Along with about 20minutes of Jumping jacks and skipping.

Just wanted to pick at your brains and see if you can point me in the right direction.

I'm not interested in gaining muscle, If anything I'd like to lose some in my legs, they're like tree trunks of muscle :p

Just simply losing the flab. I've thought about treadmill or exercise bike, but Treadmill is too big for my apartment and I fear exercise bike will increase my muscle in my legs.

Your thoughts?

A change in lifestyle is what got you where you are, and a change in lifestyle is what will help you get back where you want to be. A couple of things....

*Doing a bunch of situps will not, I repeat, will not help to reduce fat in your abdomen.

*Walking to work is wonderful.

*An exercise bike will not cause you to build crazy amounts of muscle in your legs, even if set at a heavy resistance.

*Cardio exercises are good, however, they are not the be all/end all of fat loss.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking to lose fat you have to do a ton of cardio, with no strength training. Strength training is a wonderful fat loss tool.

Also, how are your eating habits?

Eating habits haven't been as good as they should be with the new 'diet', but are improving.

I 'have' been eating nothing until about 11/11:30am - then having a tuna salad roll.

Then having some fruit sporadically throughout the afternoon.

then dinner at 7 - 8ish which is usually Brown rice, veggies and more tuna.

then another piece or two of fruit before sleep.

Ok, so..

no breakfast
tuna salad
fruit
brown rice, veggies, tuna
fruit

The foods you are eating are all healthy, so that's good. (Careful of tuna salad if you aren't making it yourself though)

A few (more) things :)...
*Don't skip breakfast - we all know better.
*Not enough.......period. Not enough fat (yes, you do need fat). Not enough protein (two serv of tuna isn't all you need). Not enough calories. Just not enough.

You are eating healthy things, which is very important, cutting out junk is a major first step. However, you still have to keep in mind how much of stuff your body needs, even when trying to lose weight.

There are two major traps people tend to fall into when trying to lose weight. The first one, we addressed (tons of cardio and situps with no strength training) - the other is diet. The belief that if we just eat as little as we can, mostly fruits and veggies - then all will be perfect. Usually the same type of people who automatically think "salad" when they think diet. lol

Im in the same boat you are man, im 6'1 and started at 197lb and started eating strict this last sunday. Basically what helps me most is tracking my daily calorie intake on fitday.com, that way i know where im at for the day. I bought a weight bench and have set up a workout routine, do some biking and such. I weighed in this am at 192.8... so i guess we'll see where im at towards the weekend or early next week. But its just about having the mindset to make a change in your lifestyle and have some willpower.
