I will try this too...(Mermaid weight loss diary)

Well, I think that I can try this too...hoping that your support and my willpower to control what I am eating will do finally the miracle!
My story:
I am 44, and I am trying to control my weight from my childhood.
My weight problems were not too big until I was 30, but I suffer from eating disorders (I used to binge eat, with a short period of anorexia when I was 27).
Now I weight 72 kilos;I also discovered I am Insulin resistant, that makes more difficult for me to lose weight; in these last months I lost 3-4 kilos, without really dieting, just because I adopted a baby and I stopped bingeing for a while...But now I am starting again and the scale is going up and down again!
My goal is to weight maximum 57 kilos, and to stop bingeing. I d like to reach my goal for the end of 2006, but I need to work really hard if I want to succeed...I need all your support and your advice!!!

Eating healthy and feeling good about yourself are two excellent things every person should do... depending on your height though, you might well be in a healthy BMI range, so please be careful about loosing weight...

You want to lose 33 pounds in about 16 weeks- at a healthy 2 pounds a week (2.2 lbs = 1 kilo) is posible to do safely... but honestly, I'd focus more on the stopping binging rather than a number...

There is a binger's anonymouse club you should read up on in the clubs thread - as well as other clubs and challenges to join...

Nice to see you here.. and love your avatar :D

Congratulations on adopting a baby... that's so wonderful... it's nice to see a child being given a loving home.

I learned that binge eating is an eating disorder just few months ago; before I was just ashamed of myself everytime I was losing control!
I know that dieting is one of the worst thing you can do having an ED, becouse dieting itself can make the bingeig worst. I also know that I'm really overweight (I'm only 1.55 m high/short;)) and being insuline resistant is not a good condition for your healt: my doctor asked me to lose weight as soon as possible. Also I'd like to be healty to try to conceive a brother/sister to my daughter: me being 44 makes this really difficult and against the odds, but hopes and prayers and medicine can do miracles sometimes!

Yesterday I didn't overeat, but I was not jet dieting properly. I also don't want to use the scale everyday, just one day/week: next will be friday, 8th september...I have 3 more days to use!

hi mermaid, congratulations on your baby :)

i've spent years doing the yoyo binge/starve cycle. its terrible and so hard to break. the best thing i've found is to concentrate on eating really healthily, seems the best starting point. plus drinking lots of water and having regular exercise. that's just a normal healthy lifestyle, rather than a diet. a low GI diet would be good with your insulin resistance.

good luck :)

Today the scale is on 71.6 kg: it is a very little loss, but better than nothing!
I will try to follow your advice about the healty diet and the water and the daily exercise...

One week later the scale is on 72 kilos again; I am not surprised, I did not diet and I am regularly (every day or every other day) overeating again. It is not bad as it used to be some months ago, but I am really bored being (just for one year!) a homewife, so I am using again the food as an antidepressant...But I am lucky enought to have my beautiful baby now, and this will help me to start again!
I should use more this diary and talk about what and how much I eat.

If you start feeling bored and want to eat, is it possible for you to put the baby in the stroller and go for a walk? Walking can help appetite and boredom. Or maybe a park. Either way, good luck on meeting your goal, it can be hard, but it can be done.:)

The last 2 days were OK: I eat 1400 cal (that is my maximum if I want to lose something) and I went for long nice walks with my baby on the stroller...Until the weather will be fine, I can exercise! I must find something else for when it will be cold and rainy...Any suggestion?
Friday is my scale day: I hope I will go on well for the next 2 days!

Just a quick update after days of silence: I did quite well with exercise, walking nearly everyday for at least 1 hour, as I planned to do.
I have collected some exercises from healt magazines that I will do when the weather will be bad (thanks for suggest!).
I did not so well with diet: I'm still having some bingeing episodes, and generally I'm not at all content with the food I ate (quantity and quality).
About my goal for the end of the year: I think that, if I will be in the next 3 months more serious with all the diet-exercise thing, I can still hope to lose 12/14 kilos: I weight 71 now, so I can still try to reach 57 kilos for New Year Eve...That should be good enought, being 57 kilos my maximum "normal" weight.
My short term goal is to see the scale under 70...I want to see that so long dreamed "69" before october 15th...

Good luck Mermaid! Do you have a hobby? I find that keeping my hands busy is helping...I scrapbook or read, or chat on the computer. Walking helps me too, and the kids love it!

Hi Mermaid! I see from the weightloss table that you regularly update your weight and that you've lost some weight. Congratulations!!! But I read in your diary that you are frustrated with binge eating.

What time of day do you find yourself eating too much? Perhaps when that time comes, you can break the cycle by being somewhere else. For example if it's around 2-4pm, maybe take an apple and just go outside with the baby - garden, walk, play. Or get in the car, drive to a mall and walk around there. If it's baby's nap time and you can't leave, then move around the house - scrub the bathroom, rearrange your closet, clean out a drawer, make your bed, do laundry, read a book, come to WLF and post on different diaries.

I guess I'm saying (and I should follow my own advice because I'm also guilty of sitting down and eating too much, especially in the afternoon) you should try to recognize when a binge is coming on and physically remove yourself from near the kitchen. Replace that action with another one. Or even clean the kitchen, clean out the pantry or fridge - face it headon!

Oh, and there's always doing 10-15 minutes strength training, 1-2 minutes of jumping jacks, doing situps, or stretching your body. Here's my favorite link for stretching, core, upper and lower body workouts (many with just your body weight or dumbbells):

If you find other tips for overcoming binge eating, I'd love to hear them.

Hey mermaid

Hi mermaid, nice to meet you :)

I also have trouble binging sometimes :(

But I have been good on my diet and not cheated for nearly a month now! I thought I'd tell you what works for me, it might work for you too I don't know! You said you count calories (1400 max I think) I do the same (I limit self to between 1000-1500cals). Some people find this restrictive, and maybe too much like effort. But the thing is, that's just what I need, restricting!!

But you are still not happy with what you're eating, so I guess you are going over your 1400 limit? What I do is in the morning (or the evening before, even better coz I have more time then!) have a peek in the fridge and see what I've got, then sit down with my calorie book and work out my menu for the day. 200cals for bfast, 100 for snack, 200-300 for lunch, and 600-800 for dinner. You'd be suprised how much that allows you to eat really, if you pick fairly low calorie things, and you will rarely feel hungry!!

Well done on all the exercise, it sounds like you're doing really well with that :)

One more tip that I do which I hope might help- if you do not buy the kind of fatty, calorific foods that you like to binge on, you cannot eat them!! Sounds simple and obvious, but try to make sure that you are full when you go food shopping (ie just after a nice, big, HEALTHY lunch!) and also have a peek at this forum before you go shopping, to make you feel all fired up and motivated. The thing is, then when you go round the store, you will be far less tempted by all those naughty-but-nice cakes and pies, so you will buy less, or even, preferable, none! And if you don't have them in the house when those cravings come along, you won't be able to eat them!! Have a lovely exotic fruit salad (to fulfil your sweet tooth) of a couscous salad (if you're craving carbs) or something like that!!

Woah what an epic post, I'll be impressed if you made it to the end!! Just hope some of it might help you a little bit :)

Hi!
Thanks for your advice: I am trying to follow some of them, and it is getting better with the bingeing...It is only 3 days I did not overeat, so I don t want to speak too early...
(But I must confess that cleaning my house is not the kind of activity that can take me far from bingeing: I go to the fridge everytime I am tired or bored, and just thinking of cleaning could make me jump on a big fat cup of ice-cream...!;) )
Waiting for my scale-day (friday) to see how it is going...
