I need some advice.

AHello everyone. Okay, so, I came here in need of some advice on weight loss and diet advice. To start things off, I'm a 15 year old guy. In height I'm about 5'11 and a half. And I way 215 pounds. Some people may say that this isn't fat. I know I'm not. But I'm pretty over weight. And I need to know of what I'm going to start doing will help me lose this weight. My plan was to start using this treadmill I have at home. But, I have no idea how long I should jog for and how many times to use it a week. Along with this jogging, I am going to start eating considerably better than I am now. Basically, I need a schedule of how many times I need to do this. And if this doesn't work, then just any kinda of workout schedule in general. And also, how long this is going to take to accomplish. My goal is to lose about 25-30 pounds. Bringing me down to roughly 190. Or lower, I'm kind of a muscular kid and I'm going to be starting crew within a week or two. But I know I'm not ready for it. So I'm hoping this will also prep me up for it as well. Sorry for the long wall of text. And thank you in advance for the information I'm hopeful on receiving.

hi this is very good you are aware of your weight. from you text i have realized that you are not over weight. so you should do exercise for 20 minutes in the morning. and very careful of taking food which basically increases weight. take fruits and vegetables as more as possible because these foods burns calories which we take everyday. and do not forget to take plenty of water everyday. take protein like egg. take tuna fish which is very essential to lose weight. best of luck.

Hey and welcome to the forum!

How long can you currently jog for, or have you been jogging/running at all in the past little while? Something for you to look into would be a "couch to 5K" type program that mixes intervals of walking and jogging. It slowly progresses to longer running intervals over time. It may be easy for you, but it's a good program for avoiding injuries. You can adapt the program to intervals that suit your current starting point. In total, try to aim for 30-45 minutes of some type of cardiovascular exercise 4-6 days per week.

Are you planning on doing any resistance training? You should be trying to workout 2-3 days per week, doing a full-body program. Maintaining (and hopefully building) lean mass will help you much more in the long run in terms of weight maintenance than only doing cardio.

You're still young and growing, so really try to avoid falling into the trap of restricting calories or starting any type of "diet."

In terms of nutrition, what do you currently eat and what is your plan for eating better?

ASo, are you saying I should be doing cardio excercises and weight lifting? Or muscle toning sort of? And for jogging/running I haven't really tried to before I'm unsure as to how long I can do that for. I'm going to try tomorrow after school and I shall post results. As for the nutrition part, I was planning on cutting out a lot of the saturated fats that I eat. I'm going to start eating more healthier foods like more vegetables, more protein and chicken. Sorry, I'm not to knowledgable on these sort of things. That's why I cams here in hope of some assistance to get my weight under control. Because we all know, that has a lot to do with ones confidence. :p

Fruits and veggies do not help burn cals. They are low in cals and high in nutrients, THATS why we should eat them.

Yes, definitely do both. The type of training that you do will depend on your goals and activities/sports. You said that you're starting crew in a couple of weeks - do you have a coach or someone that you can contact for a training program?

So if you haven't really done any running or jogging before, then I would definitely recommend starting with a walk/run program like this: http://www.tc10k.ca/pdf/TC10KTraining-StartRight.pdf

You might want to start at week 5 or 6

Ok, so I know you're in school and the last thing you want to do is more reading, but I'll give you some resources here for both general nutrition info and for balancing meals properly:

No worries, it's just hard to get a sense of what you know from one forum post, so it usually takes a couple of posts back and forth to get a sense of your starting point. Keep asking questions!

AThank you for all his information! It's highly appreciated. As for crew, yes. Im going to be joining the team. And for the personal coach, I planned on signing up at a gym that has a personal trainer. But, sadly that's not happening. Exactly why I'm trying to take this into my own hands. I have no doubt this will work though because of the mass amount of information you've already given me. Thank you do much for all the help!

No problem. Keep in mind that the information that I gave you is really based on the general population and doesn't really take into account sport-specific training or nutririon. But hopefully it can provide a base of knowledge for you.

As for a coach, I was actually referring to a coach for your crew team... I'm assuming you're talking about rowing, so is there a coach for that? I really don't know how the sport of rowing operates, so I can't really help you out with resources there. If you can get in contact with someone, that would be great, but getting any headstart on your fitness is a good idea!
