I lost 100 pounds in four months

I am not a doctor or a dietician. I am just a reasonably intelligent guy with a lot of free time and way too much information in my head. I found some ideas that when put to use generate the loss of an average of a pound a day. I’d like to share the basis of how it works.

Something created in the mind technically is not real. It can become real but it is not real until you take some action. Now for something completely different…

Metabolism is a set of chemical reactions that seeks to maintain and preserve the organism using the least amount of energy. It has been proven that you can reset your metabolism but it requires a change in eating habits over time. Right now there are articles in magazines that outline certain diets to do this so I won’t go into it right now. Go check it out for yourself.

It doesn’t matter to your metabolism if you are happy with the results or not. It is what it is and wants to stay that way. This is why you do fine for a bit, lose some weight and then go right back to where you started.

There is not an ounce of fat that got onto your body without you thinking about it. You thought of something then you went and got it. Since the quality and quantity that you eat is a major factor in dictating the level of your metabolism and your thoughts dictate what you eat then your mind ultimately controls your metabolism. I offer that in this line of reasoning there is a mental metabolism that hides in the background of the mind and that if you figure out how to reset that then your body’s metabolism can be put wherever you want.

Like a mechanic, you can’t repair a broken engine unless you understand it; here is a concept that outlines the engine of the mind.

In your mind, have you ever said to yourself why did you do that, you need to get moving or that’s not like you? It probably happens all the time. The thing of it is that the word you is a second person pronoun but there’s only one of you. Kind of odd when you look at it like that. The way I look at it, there are actually three main components of the mind that dictate behavior. What to do about it is a different story but here are the players of the mind.

The first one is the voice that you are familiar with. The inner monologue or whatever you want to call it. This voice is in constant action and it is how we are able to reason things out and solve problems. Since it is always doing things I refer to it as the human Doing. If you reduce the action that it does to its base function it does one thing. It compares stuff. It compares things outside to each other such as when you say a car is green and not blue. It also compares things to you such as when you say that car is better than your car and here is where the trouble starts. When the Doing starts making comparisons to you, it gets stumped because the real you at your core is an entity that is not subject to comparison. That is the second player of the mind.

Deep within all of us at our core is something that is ageless, timeless and perfect. It has no past or future and does not seek to compare things because it is connected to everything. This is the human Being. Experiences such as unconditional love, true gratitude or bliss exist in the Being. They too are ageless and timeless. An example is that unconditional love does not require that you meet requirements. It is something that happens right now and does not depend on yesterday or tomorrow.

The Doing tries to compare things to the Being and gets no response because the Being doesn’t have one. It has no opposite in existence. So the Doing, great problem solver that it is, creates something to use in comparing. This is called the Collective.

If I ask you to describe yourself, anything you say will be the result of a comparison. A woman is not a man, a teacher is not a police officer, an obese person is not a thin person. These things that you use to define yourself are part of the Collective. They are the things you believe make you who you are.

Those are the players now for how it relates to weight loss.

The action of cheating on a diet or just eating poorly comes down to one thing. A comparison. I’ll slow it down so we can see the process. Warning…this is something the Doing does not want you to know. If you made it this far without much resistance that is about to change.

Imagine you found this awesome diet that works for everyone but it forbids turkey and stuffing. There is no diet like that this is just an example. In your mind, you have pictures and memories of Thanksgiving and all the things that go with it. It’s all very real to you and it is a part of you but all those things will be gone in the future. Those memories are part of the Collective. The Doing compared a you not having turkey and stuffing to the part of you that experiences those things. If you cheat on this diet it is the result of this type of comparison. This mechanism is responsible for any diet that fails. There is more to giving up a certain food as you can see you are actually giving up part of yourself.

Since nothing created in the mind is actually real and a lot of your actions are based on a comparison to something created in the mind then most of the problems you have with eating the right food are based on an illusion.

If you can learn to see this process in action, you can control it. This takes time but it works.

Here is the next part of how I lost 100 pounds

It is about the Identity Crisis

Earlier I showed how the act of comparison is something that is done and needed but can also lead to many problems. Now comes the time to see what to do with that information. The problematic component of this dynamic is the Collective. Let’s spend some time getting to know this entity and all its tricks so we can make a positive step toward our weight loss goals.

This post may sound like a lot but don’t get overwhelmed. It’s here to read whenever you want and there is an exercise at the end to reinforce the main idea. The Collective will still be there when you get to the end so don’t get excited. Dealing with that entity is vigorous mission and takes some work. Before you defeat an enemy, you need to get to know their tactics. That is what this is about.

The goal of what I did to lose weight was to obtain consciousness of mind. One of the first things in that direction was to diminish or remove the entity called the Collective. To do this I had to get to know it. I will share some of what I know about it and how to go about fixing the situation.

One of the first things to know about it is that the Collective is at the root of addiction. Any kind of addiction. If you ever cheated on a diet this process occurred even if you don’t think, it was an addiction. It’s the process I’m referring to when I say this. The Collective loves addiction because it’s like a bullet-proof vest. It thinks it’s invulnerable in this state. It is not. The Doing knows this and will put a fight to protect this creation in order to carry out its job.

The key to consciousness of mind is to see this and the other types of defense the Collective has. It is a process so don’t worry if it doesn’t all happen at once. That is why obtaining and consistently maintaining consciousness of mind is so important.

Another thing the Collective does is to use various types of camouflage. One is called ownership. If in referring to a food item you’ve ever said something like “that’s my brand†then the camouflage worked. You skipped right by the Collective. Pay attention as you speak to how you refer to things as yours. Each time you do, you are reinforcing the Collective’s presence in your mind. A subdivision of ownership is the act of taking things personally. This is doubly bad because it camouflages the ownership. You get so worked up about what someone said or how you think a situation occurred that you miss the sub textual existence of ownership that you may have been looking for in the first place. See what I mean about how sneaky these things are?

Now for the big one and in my opinion as defenses go this is a masterpiece. The Collective and the Doing teamed up to use the paradoxical existence of the mind/body to their advantage. By that I am referring to the observable cause and effect attribute of our three dimensional world.

There are logical steps to take in the real world and they follow the rules of cause and effect. The Doing formed the Collective exploiting these laws as much as possible. If I say you can’t have chocolate cake ever again you don’t think of simply no cake. You see a story. Cause and effect. How you will feel without it. How hard that would be. Maybe even what others would think and that brings in another layer of camouflage. What a masterpiece. You may see the steps you’d have to take to not have cake. The whole process might just shut you down, which is what the Doing wants because it needs the Collective. It does, but you don’t. Remember that.

Here’s the thing about cause and effect. It’s only real on the outside. Your mind doesn’t operate like that, even if you think it does. In your mind and in the Being deep inside you, there is no time so there is no cause and effect. In the real world, change takes time. There are steps. There is no time in the mind. Change happens instantaneously. When you try to make a change that will diminish the Collective this is one of the tricks. You may think if you don’t think about it the change won’t last or it’s worthless unless you work at it. That’s 3D stuff. We’re in the mind. Accept that change takes no time and you are on the right path.

Since time is one the major component of cause and effect, watch out for it. It may be difficult at first but keep going. As you go through the week, examine your decision process and notice how time is involved. Observe how you tend to go into the future or the past when you consider a course of action. This action is needed sometimes, which is what makes this so perfect as a defense. What you’re looking for is the part of the Collective that has formed into a story. Once you get in the habit of shining a light on this arrangement, you will enter a place where you are in control.

The Doing and Collective are aware that you have the capability to change in an instant. It puts real fear in them which is why they put in overtime on this one. It is the biggest part of the paradox defense that they use. It concerns the act of letting go. When you let go of your attachment to any part of the Collective it is like hitting it with a bunker busting bomb. Total chaos. If you are under the impression that letting go of any unhealthy food forever is difficult, then their defense is working. What they don’t want you to know is that letting go is not a process. It requires no preparation or amount of time to occur. Letting go just happens. That’s it. You decide to let something go and its gone. The challenge to this is another little safeguard the added to their masterpiece.

On top of everything else put in your way so far there is another piece. It is so useful that it is used in other ways but it works excellent in this context. When you let something go, there is a little gap left. The first instinct is to fill it quick. But it is like a band aide that allows the Collective to heal and possibly restore itself. It is the basis of replacement products and also why they so often fail. When you let go of a piece of the Collective there is one less piece for the Doing to use in comparison. It freaks out a little. Which in turn causes you to freak out right along with it.

If you have ever been in that wonderful state of not knowing what to do then you are at the doorstep of this neat little tool. By definition, despair is a pause in reason. Nothing else. Remember that. When the Doing can’t do its job fully it has one of these little pauses that sends you into overdrive to take action. Defeating this line of defense takes courage. Part of obtaining the consciousness of mind is to learn to exist in that place of despair. I don’t mean be miserable. I am referring to the absolute definition of despair. It is no more than a pause in reason. Learn to see this for what it is and don’t let it consume you.

The Being has no despair because it transcends the world of cause and effect. That is why I said to emulate the Being. Don’t get in a hurry to have the Being run things or ask how. Know its possible and have the courage to let it happen. Because of the conditions of its existence, the state of the Being is not something that is found by a quick set of actions. This state just like letting go just happens. It happened to me and I will never go back to the way I was before. I value that part of me more than anything in the world. Just have the courage to persist.

The next type of defense is just as brilliant because it also operates under a paradox. It is the use and value of roles in the mind. Roles have a function in our society. You talk to your mother different than you talk to someone you post comments to on this site. Each of those are roles. They make up who you are. The problem comes when your role becomes part of the Collective. You see yourself as the role not who you are. The Doing wants you to cling to these roles because they strengthen its ability to operate. Keep in your mind that you are not the role. As you go through the week, identify one role you play as you are in that role once a day. When you get in the habit of identifying them, you can release some of them and thus diminish the Collective somewhat.

I hope this helped you see a little of bit of how hard the Doing is trying to protect the Collective. As I said, the Collective is at the root of addiction which is part of what stops us from eating healthy. The act of noticing these actions in your mind is the first part of removing them. The actual act of doing so will come later. But here are the actions I took and I offer them as exercises to go along with this post.

I suggested earlier that you spend a minute or two in the state of gratitude when you wake up before you do anything else. Continue to do that but add this.

Every day this week, go outside and spend 3 minutes not labeling anything. You see a tree don’t think tree, focus on its existence, its Being. If a bird flies by, don’t think of what kind it is, just appreciate it. The purpose of this is to let the Being have a shot at looking through your eyes for a few minutes.

This is actually how I lost 100 pounds in four months. I wanted consciousness and put a higher value on that than anything else. I got a list of food I could eat to maintain my weight at my ideal goal. I was already there in my mind; I just let my body catch up.

Thank you and have a blissful day!

I do get that from time to time. However I steer toward thinking that sanity is overated. It may sound crazy but it works. I have actually done this with people and had sucess with it. Perhaps its that this is typed and I didnt hear it outloud. When I talk to people I may explain it better.

thank you for the comment.

Have fun and live a blissful day
