I look lighter than I am? Wierd body types

I've recently started exersizing, and losing weight, about 35 pounds in the last few months. Everyone is noticing it, and when I tell them what I weigh, (I'm not very embarassed about it) nobody believes me! They say there is no possible way I could wiegh almost 300 lbs.

I know muscle weighs more, and maybe I just have more muscle than I think. I have a large frame, there is no doubt about that. I don't work out my arms regularly, but I can bench 235 lbs for 3-4 reps, so i know I've got muscle there. But here are some of my stats:

I am 6' 2" tall.
Size 38 waist
XL shirts (XXL is a little more comfy).

I can give other measurements if you guys are curious, but I weigh 295 lbs, and every time people guess 250-275. I have a "beer gut" for sure, but apparently it's not enough to make me look like I'm pushing 300. What's funny is, one of my good friends:

6'-4"
Size 54 waist
XXXL or XXXXL shirts

Weight: 325 lbs. He's only 30 pounds heavier than I (on the same scale, we checked it) and he looks so much larger.

So I'm just kind of curious as to why this? Has anyone else experienced this as well? I'm thankful for it, believe me, but it seems a little weird to me.

I have sort of the opposite, I am 6", some some amount of muscle, yet weight only 67kg (147.4lbs), and it's like...I don't know anyone who weights less or near me than me who is near my height.

And it's not like I'm very skinny either =/

A bench press 235 3 or 4 times is impressive for someone who doesn't lift (and even for someone who does). And a 38 waist is not bad at all for nearly 300. I wore a 36 when I was at my peak weight of 218 last year and would certainly have worn a 44 or more if I weighed 300. So it is clear that you are packing some muscle under that beer belly and have a lower fat content than most 300 lbers.

I commend you for setting realistic goals and making steady progress. That is a good combination for longterm success.
