I just don't know how to do it

Hey All,

I am not going to bore all of you with a long winded story and rather get to it straight to the point...

I have been a chubby kid all my life, here I am now at age 30 close to 200 lbs and while acheiving a lot, I have not achieved the happiness of being fit. I am beginning to feel uncomfortable in my clothes in social situations, I avoid pools, beaches, and things of that sort, and I HATE shopping for new clothes (its always just a dissapointment)

What I want is an easy way to lose some weight and begin looking and feeling good. Maybe some of you can help me on how to do it.

Here's my initial plan:

1. To have three straight meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe a side of fruit somewhere in there and possibly a glass of milk. I am going to aviod all soda, acohol, and even fruit juice (basically anything with calories) for the time being.

Does anyone have some recomendations on a lite breakfast to eat? I am jsut thinking cheerios and milk, but if there is something other good recomendations I am always willing to listen.

For lunch I am going to try to stomach a salad everyday, this will be hard, but lets see if I can at least do it three times a week. Slowely build it to something I do everyday.

For dinner, again, the keyword is lite. Grilled chicken, salads, subway sandwiches, etc.

2. Obviously exercise.. I am thinking some lite cardio for 30-40 minutes daily. A jog in my neighborhood, eliptical or treadmill at the gym. Again any recomednations to keep it fresh?

I will throw in some weight training eventually for good measure, but my main goal right now is to LOSE weight.

They say a healthy way to lose is 1-2 lbs per week, if I can actually do that it would lead to a 50+ lb loss in a year! This would be amazing if possible.

If anyone know how to incorporate diet into our lives while maintaining a job and social life please help!

Looking forward to your replies!

I would say the main thing is don't try to drop the calories down too fast. You are more likely to stay on these life changes is you work into them. The idea of salads 3 times a week is a pretty good one. coming here for advice and support is another great idea.

Hi!

To be honest, everything you said is pretty good. You have the right idea, just don't go too far too fast and you will be just fine.

Hey There. Welcome! This forum can certainly help you stay on track.

I'm no nutrition expert but I'd suggest planning on a couple or three snacks a day in between meals. Your idea of fruit (i.e. a handful of grapes, bluberries, an apple etc) is a great one! If you incorporate snacks you'll never be too hungry.
Also, as far as breakfast I'd suggest instant oatmeal (just watch the sugar if you opt for the flavored packs). It has more fiber than cold cereal. Protein smoothies and egg white omeletes (with veggies) are great also.
The salads are a good idea but if you really don't like 'em, try to find healthy options you enjoy. You won't stick with eating something you dislike.
I've been walking outside. Any exercise outside is more interesting than a machine indoors. Once I'm more body confident I'll join a flag football and hiking club. I'm going to start trail running this week.

Best of luck to you!

hello :)

your plan sounds really good.. ! im just startin of too, been dieting a week now... however my best advice is to plan each meal for each day the night b4...

write it down or type it in your phone and bring your plan with you EVERYWHERE.. plan what time you will eat at and think about how long you will be awake for during the day so you dont end up goin ages without eating.. make sure you check the calories in evrything you eat ...write your meal and them down!
this way you now exactly what you ate and how much..

i use an app on my ipod to calculate my recommended calorie intake to lose 2 pound a week and i type all my foods into it and it keep track of my calories for me :)

google "calculate BMR".. work out what yours recomende calorie intake to maintain you weight is and for every pound a week you wanna lose deduct 500 calories a day or work them off... DO NOT deduct more than 1000.. it wont work right if you do...

o and as for breakfast..weigh your cereal.. and measure your milk..you should do this for all foods... never undercompensate for what you have eaten or youll only be lying to yourself.!

try eggs (scrambled boiled etc ) in the morning..full of protien.. and if you dont eat the yellow you will be consuming very few calories..
porridge is really filling and healthy..
dont eat bread.. so many carbs and youll just feel bloated..

if your looking for something nice but filling throughout the day why not 1/2 a tin of spagetti... filling and only 120 cals! =]
if yave any questiosn just ask...

good luck!

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great tips! It feels really good to know there's other people trying a bunch of things and working together to get it done.

I avoided meeting some friends for a beer, didn't goto the fridge to find some snack to eat and am getting ready for bed. Pretty amazing because those are things I almost never do recently.

Anyways, I'll take all your advice and try to mix my diet with more healthy foods. I think portion control, exercise, and avoiding the booze will show me great results. All of you please keep me updated with your lifesyles as well.

Alright, little update on the situation.
Over the last week or so, I have been taking some steps to take control over my life and weight issues. I did the following so far:

1. I have been sleeping on time and waking up on time. Basically I landed back after my holiday and was a bit jetlagged. I been falling asleep by 9-10pm and been getting up before the alarm around 6:30-7:00 am. Now this is very unlike me, and its great! I make breakfast, surf the web, watch tv.. then begin my day. I get to the office first, am ahead of my work. Its really fantastic!

2. I been eating more at home. I won't say its the healthiest of the healthiest foods, but it has been home cooked. Also non processed, consisting of carbs, veg, and meat. Mainly low fat chicken breast. I make grilled chicken, home made pizza with a little cheese, small chicken quesedillas, stuff like that.

3. Today I actually went to the gym. I did 45 mins on the treadmill, then did a small chest workout. I hope to do a 45 min treadmill / elliptical program then do some machine weights beginning with one area in mind and completeting the entire circuit during the weeks time.

So so far pretty good. Feeling great and am pretty pumped. Anyone have similiar stories? Would love to hear them!
