I Just Ate My Willpower!

~Background~

I am a 32 year old mother of 3 (Melissa - 14; Logan - 2.5; Derek - 8m). Prior to kids, I was VERY skinny... not something I would like to get back to.

Pre-kids: 100lbs (was 5'10")
Top Pregnancy weight - Melissa: 210lbs
Post-partum: 160-170lbs

Pre-TTC - Logan: 165lbs (I am now 5'8" due to poor bone density)
Pre-pregnancy: 186lbs
Top Pregnancy weight: 206lbs
Post-Partum: 186lbs

Pre-TTC - Derek: 166lbs
Top pregnancy weight: 206lbs
Post-Partum: 186lbs

*By post-partum I mean around 6-8 months or more postpartum... so the baby fat that natually goes away after birth and such I am not counting.

~Current Plan~

Starting weight: 180
Goal weight: 150
Total to lose: 30lbs

I am nursing my son, so I have to watch what I eat and not eat too little. I plan to try to stay around 1600-1800 calories a day. This worked well while I was nursing Logan.

I would like to start running regularly. I also have Wii Fit and Wii Fitness Trainer and will do these as well. Ok, changed my mind... I decided to do the couch to 5k method. I have heard good things, and today a good friend I know personally who runs marathons highly recommended it. So for the next 9 weeks, I only run 3 days a week. I will do Wii Fit/Wii Fitness Trainer 3 days a week as well, and take one freebie day each week.

Sunday, May 3rd:

For my "first day" I did ok. Ate well, except for the chips my husband bought (5 bags!) and rice krispy bars after grilling dinner at friend's house.

I am doing the 3 weeks to a 30 minute running habit. I walked 10 minutes, then ran/walked 1/1 ten times (20 minutes), then walked 10 minutes. It was painful. Oy. I did great for the first half but was struggling for the 2nd half. I also ended up with a big blister on my right pinky toe. :( I don't think my shoes are intended for running. I will save them for walking with my family and buy some running shoes.

Hello MeLoDe, great plan!! Welcome to the Forum. :)

Thanks!!

Actually, I changed my mind and I am doing the couch-to-5k method to get started. It is similar to what I was doing I think, but I can SEE this method written out and plan for it... the other was the kind of thing that each day I get an email telling me what to run that day.

I got a new pair of Brooks shoes tonight as well. I was looking at a pair of max support Aasics but they didn't have them in a 10. :( The ones I got are awesome though, so I am happy with them. I got a deal as well, they were on sale for $80. Woohoo! Not bad for a 1st pair of running shoes, eh?

I ended up popping my blister I got from my 1st run (and doing it in walking shoes) and covering it. I was worried it would pop when I wouldn't have access to ointment and a bandage. No problems with it yet.

Eating today... yeah... I did "ok" I suppose. No breakfast (bad habit) besides tea with splenda. Small bowl of whole grain pasta with marinara... probably 1 cup of pasta. I did have 2 servings of potato chips mid-afternoon, and then my sister took me out for chinese! Ugh. I truly did eat my willpower. Actually, I did ok... better than I usually do. I have trouble "leaving" food on the plate and I had 2 plates of food and really only ate 3/4 of the first one (the messy/saucy foods) and 1/3 of the other one (egg roll, crab rangoon, etc... finger foods). So, even though I had a bad dinner, I did better than usual, and overall I kept my snacking to those 2 handfuls of chips! Yay!

Tomorrow I want to try to get up and run early... but I am NOT a morning person, so that is probably not gonna happen!

Hi MeLoDe, and welcome to you! Looks like you are off to a good start, Yay for you!!! :hurray:

Thanks, Kori! :seeya:

My new shoes are awesome. No problems with my feet, but now my knees hurt. Ugh! Not bad, but a few of my running intervals I had to toy around with my gait so that my knees didn't hurt. I think running with the stroller sucks... I hope I can get out without one of the boys now and then.

I ate "ok". Skipped breakfast again, salad for lunch, small piece of the ice cream cake my sister left, a couple graham crackers for a snack, ramen and a few potato chips and 2 pieces of cheese for dinner, another small piece of ice cream cake and a few chips (like 4) after dinner.

I need to start tracking calories. I wonder if I can remember my sparkpeople ID... hmm...

Your runner's are probably good ones too. You don't wanna know where I got mine from or how much I spent on them. That's ok if they don't last me long, I wanted to make sure it wasn't just a phase that I was going through. Next pair will be better for the long *run*, heehee I love doin that.

If you want to run in the morning, I am sure it will come, eventually. :)

Hi! You mentioned bone density issues? You are I hope, especially if you are nursing, taking calcium? you don't want to mess with that...

I bought the max support ASICS shoes, the gel foundations and tried the couch to 5 k plan, but my weight is still too high for running. 'sokay, got a great set of walking shoes now anyway!

Sounds like you are off to a great start! I like the daily plate for tracking because it has just about every name brand food under the sun already logged into the database. You don't have to work as hard as some of the other sites.

Have a good one!

Oh, that is so me... tend to do things and then fizzle out. That is why I want the goal of a 5K. It gives me something concrete to work towards.

I take prenatals. I gave up on the calcium a long time ago. We tried a few brands and it seems my body doesn't absorb the calcium because my density never improved. It did improve between 2 bone scans (get them every 18 months for a study I am in) that were 3 years apart since I was pregnant during one. My density should have gotten worse with pregnancy and nursing, but the thing was that when I got pregnant with Logan I couldn't stand soda, and I was a true addict before that (5-6 diet cokes a day on average). I still don't drink it much. I have developed a taste for things like cherry coke zero, but I don't "need" it anymore and rarely chose soda over things like lemonade at restaurants.

Good point though. I may look at adding some calcium in. I mean, it can't hurt. If I am running and therefore getting more sun, it will help since I will get more vitamin D... and just running should help my density as well since that was something they recommended (the people doing the study). I have borderline cholesterol... usually around 190, so this will help as well since my problem there is low HDL.

I bet those are the same Asics I tried on. Max support. So awesome. I will probably try to get those next time. I am going to wear my knee supports tomorrow when I run. Nothing fancy, just those snug fabric supports, just to see if they help. They have helped in the past with other activities.

So checking out daily plate! Thanks!!

My left knee is still achey this morning, nothing bad, just when going down stairs it smarts a bit. Other than that, I am not very stiff at all! And I was down a pound this morning. Yipee!

Hey Mel,

Welcome to the club to start with.

Good luck on the c25k. I'm hoping to find a 5k to run in by the time I get done with the program myself. There are several out there, it's just figuring out which one will fit into my schedule.

Anyways, good luck in your new adventure in life.

Thanks for the welcome!

I think I am going to shoot for a 5K on July 11th. It is a "run for beef and eggs" and they have breakfast at the end... what a motivator for my first race, eh? :willy_nilly:

There is one on June 26th in my home town, and one of my son's therapists was trying to talk me into doing one on June 6th that benefits SIDS research (Running for their lives)... I didn't know she was a runner! She is doing a cancer research 10k this weekend.

I checked out daily plate then went to livestrong (daily plate is part of livestrong now) and LOVE it! I downloaded the blackberry app... that will be a HUGE help. I can now check the calories of or add foods right away no matter where I am. :hurray:

The daily plate is a pretty good tracking device. The only thing I don't like: I think the accuracy of calories burned for some exercises leaves something to be desired. I am 6'8" and still pretty heavy, but I do not think I'm truly burning 1500 cal/hr when I'm cycling, which is how they score it. I have a hard time believing that I could ride my bike for 2 hours and eat another 3000 calories for the day...

Admittedly, my average speeds are in the 16 +mph range and I'm big but...

Yeah, there are some silly exercises on there. Dude, who keeps track of how many minutes they are walking in church?

My walk/run tonight went well... I also had no stroller and I used the podcasts from the C25K. So I didn't have to concentrate on the watch. I think having the stroller I don't stay loose (have to keep a grip on the stroller) and that wears me out faster. Sunday I start week 2, and I will also add back in my Wii work outs.

I am pretty sure I will be signing up for a 5k on July 11th. Registration starts next week. I need to just bite the bullet and register. I think I can be ready by then if nothing goes wrong (get hurt, twist an ankle, etc). The C25K is 9 weeks long, and that 5K is like 11 weeks away. Plus it is the one with breakfast at the end! Score!

Well, my running is on hold. My knees ended up hurting pretty badly after that 3rd run, and still hurt today. I saw an orthopedic PA and I am on 800mg ibuprofen 3x a day, and icing my knees a LOT. No running for 2 weeks, so I plan to start with a modified pre-week 1 on the 26th. I might see if I can handle a couple walks this week. I have some braces that I will wear for a while as well, continue to ice after every run, and take the ibuprofen (lower dose) regularly as well.

I have now lost 9lbs though. So I haven't fallen completely off the wagon! I am excited to get back into running though. After my pre-week-1 I will know more if I will be able to handle a 5k on July 25th or if I need to perhaps just shoot for doing one on October 24th for sure, and if I can find enough others to make a team do part of a 15 mile run in September.

Ouch, sorry to here about the knees. All I can say is take your time and get yourself healed properly. I'm rooting for you...

Great job on losing the 9.
