I fell off the wagon, and am gaining weight again

I'm 6'3, and currenly weigh about 265 pounds, my ideal healthy weight is 190.

I'd be happy at 215.

I swore that in 2009 I would get off my ass and stick to a program to get fit- i'm 40 this year, and I need to get fit for my health and for my personal life- What have I done since Christmas? EAT! I am angry and ashamed at myself..

I went food shopping this week, and within 2 days ate all the food in my apt.

I am really down on myself about this- I lost 20 pounds since Halloween, and discovered I gained back 10!!!

The temptation is there to just go cold turkey and stop eating

If you stopped eating completely you would lose weight till you eventually died. You need to eat to sustain life. So, I wouldn't recommend that.

Even in the short-term, starving yourself (read starving as meaning reducing your caloric intake to an unhealthy level) does not cause sustainable weight loss.

You could get down to 215 by 2010 without much trouble if you are consistant (thats only 3 pounds a month, less than 1 lb a week). See, look at it long term and its a goal you can do. Just don't let the small slip ups get to you.

Were you very restrictive when you lost weight after halloween? If so its not surprising that your eating has gotten out of control now. For the same reason it would *really* not be a good idea to just stop eating now. Once you started eating again you'd probably find yourself in a similar position to you are now.

The best thing to do is to make changes to your eating and exercise habits that are sustainable -that you could keep up for the rest of your life. It would also be a good idea to record your food intake and count calories at least at first so you get an idea of how much you should be eating. Info about how to work out how much your intake should be can be found in the stickied thread.

You've still lost 10lb since Halloween! That's pretty good really so don't let the gain get you down -just make sure it stops now :)

Yeah, 10 lbs is great, even if it's ten more than what you had originally.

I agree, don't starve yourself. It's not worth it. If you lose weight that way, what happens when you start eating normally again? Can you eat THAT way for the rest of your life?!

I sure can't. You have to find a food plan that works for you, that's healthy for your body and allows you to lose the weight that you need to lose.

There's a lot of this information on this site and also on the web. The best tools are knowing what are portion sizes and how much you should eat in a day. Figure that out, and you can play around with your calories on a daily basis to see what best fits your hunger.

I found that I could easily eat a package of Pillsbury croissants in a day and still be within my calorie range, but it also meant that I would be hungry. But if I ate only one croissant, then I can happily eat other things too and feel full.

You can play around with that and figure out what works for you -- and you don't have to eat carrot sticks all day.

Don't lose heart. Don't starve yourself. Your body won't be the only thing that suffers, emotionally and mentally it will destroy you. That's not what you need or deserve.

Take your time making beautiful healthy meals for yourself. You deserve it and you can do it.

Any loss is an achievement.

Thanks everyone! I have about 60 pounds to drop, and I swear, i feel like I'm at the bottom of Mt Everest looking up..I hope to god i can do it...
