I am so frustrated, angry, annoyed, confused..i could keep going but i won't...Please somebody help me??? I have been doing great with calorie intake (1000 / day roughly), 5 x a week cardio (elliptical for 45-60 minutes with intervals built in), 3 x a week strength training and i keep weighing in (only once per week) and NOTHING loses. What am I doing wrong? This is crazy. I am eating 5-6 small meals. I am taking vitamins. I am drinking a minimum of 64 oz a day. Please help? Any ideas? Anything I can try? I know you all will probably say that I am gaining muscle, but there is FAT and FLUBBER over that muscle and i need to lose it. I just do. And , I obviously need some help. Anybody ? Anybody ? Please don't tell me I am plateau-ing as I hit a plateau a little while back that lasted 8 months. I don't think that is it but I am so confused and irritated. Breath, relax, patience. I hear ya, but fitday is telling me that I am losing 0.33lb/week. That just isn't going to cut it. HELP?! Suggestions VERY WELCOME!!!???? Anybody have similar experience and can shed some light? I am so baffled....and

Thank you (and for listening to my venting).

well skyler...first of all, everyone hits plateus..and they are frusterating, but you need to keep going.

Secondly, you are eating 1000 a day and then doing alot of excersize?? Sounds like you really should up your cals! If you don't eat enough, your body will go into starvation mode and not burn as much as it should.

You'll get through this, just dont give up!

edit...oops, sorry, didn't realize i wasn't supposed to say the "p" word :)

you definately need to up your calories by a few hundred! your a guy right? so you should be eating around 1500.

no, i'm a girl. and i have been eating 1200 until this past week i dropped it to 1050 bc the biggest loser diet said if you weigh 150, you can eat 1050 calories and exercise 5-6 days/week 45-60 min at a time. i wasn't losing so i figured i'd try that for a week. didnt work. just recalculated what i need calorie wise to lose, etc and it says 1150/day - its only 100 cal. difference so i highly doubt i am in starvation mode (been there before).
nb- no biggie on talking plateaus, i just cant imagine that i'd hit anohter one so fast!

Skyler, I am really sorry you're going through this. I wish I had an answer for you. I really wish that the scale was moving for you... The only thing I can think of ... maybe the scale is broken and it just does not go below your weight? LOL. :) I can understand how you feel, and I can offer a shoulder to cry on.

I think you are doing everything right. I just cannot pin-point as to why you're not loosing more. The weird thing that I thought is that fitday is saying you should be loosing only 0.33lbs/week? What does fitday say you burn in a day? I'm about the same weight as you, and fitday says that I burn about 1550 calories per day. With eating 1000 cals only, you should have a good deficit of 500 cals/day, which should technically put you on 1 lb/week loss.

If you have Bally fitness gym in your area, you can go there and measure your resting metabolic rate to find out for sure at what rate YOU burn calories. Fitday's calculation just uses a formula, and it may not be very accurate for you.

Another thing you can do is try weighing yourself every day just to monitor your water wegiht fluctuation. I looked at the history of my weight, and if I weiged myself only 1nce a week, it would look like I don't loose anything at all, but in actuality I lost a lot more. Because one day you may have low water, then next time you weigh in you may have medium water, and next you may have high water. You could have lost a lb or more between 3 weeks and not know it because of water weight fluctuations. It used to drive me crazy to weigh myself every day, but now I don't even pay attention to it, and I'm glad stuck with it, because when I see in fitday a graph that shows overall weight loss, it is very inspiring!

NB- i weigh 143 and am 5'5''

NTL - fitday says over the past month, it says i average burning 2300 calories (includes basal, lifestyle & activities) and lost 0.5 lb / week (it was the past two months that says 0.33/week but doesnt have that report for average calories burned for that long...i'm assuming it is the same.

AND it says average calorie intake over the past month has been 1190, so that should be right...RIGHT???

Fitday is a program that you can use to track your calorie/exercise, weight, measurements and bunch of other things. You can use online version at fitday.com or buy a program and install it on your computer.

Ok, I understand it now - 0.5/wk is your actual loss, not the predicted one. So, that's good, that means you are loosing weight, just not as fast as you would like. I think 2300 is a bit too high of an estimation. I found personally for me that fitday was overestimating my activities by about 200 cals/day. Then I adjusted those basic estimated activities to a lower level, that's how I came up with 1550. For example, for work fitday booked me 8 hrs of light sitting activity. It considers typing a light seated activity, but I don't type all 8 hrs without end, I maybe type max 2 hrs, the rest I spend talking, reading emails, documents, etc, which is basically equal non-activity, and just re-destributing that cut out about 100 calories or more.

I am sorry, I wish I had a more constructive suggestions, but I think you're really doing everything right, and I think you should stick with it. I feel for your struggles though. Nothing is more frustrating then a non-moving scale.
I think having a scale with fat percent might help with perception of progress, and so is measuring yourself with tape. I think you are making progress, just for some reason the scale is not reflecting it. It will do so eventually, but for now all you can do is keep going at it.

Hi Skyler.

NO plateau talk, promise.

I suggest HIIT. Intense interval training. Its what I do when the stupid scale wont budge.

When you are working out, for ONE MINUTE, bust your ASS! I mean go as hard and fast as you can. Dont go the exact same pace as always. THen, after a minute of intense work, slow it down. THen ago moderate for a min or two, then HARD again! Sweat like youve never sweat before.

I say dont up the cals. Change the cals you are eating. Have u tried going the high protein approach? Chicken, turkey, beef, beef jerky, eggs, you know, lots of high protien foods. This is probably what your body is craving since you are already workin it so hard.

Up your water by a glass or two. Your body will adjust, and the peeing wont be so bad after a few days,

thats about all I can think of, but it works for me.

Also give your self a break, and go ahead and weigh in every single mornng until you see a budge. its what your psyche needs right now.

ABOVE ALL, DONT QUIT! I feel ya darlin i really do.

Switch up your routine. Do something different every day so your body doesn't get used to it.

What kind of foods are you eating? Sometimes counting calories alone isn't enough. Watch your fat and protien intake: up the protien and lower the fat.

Also, you might be building up muscles which are smaller than fat but weigh more.

And, I do hate to say it, you might be on a plateau (yes yes, I know, it's a bad word) if your last one was 8 months ago.

For a week, try lowering your intensity and eat very healthy foods...no cheating. Just eat right with a little bit of exercise. I did this once and that broke my plataeu (and lost about 5 pounds that week, too)

Good luck!

thank you all. Kate, that is great advice as i do interval training but will try your plan. I do change up my foods b/c i think during my last plateau, it was calories in correct but the same foods and that got me stuck, so i am aware of that one.

that is interesting about lowering exercise and eating healthy and you lose weight. i guess it is tricking the body? hmm. i dont really want to slow down my exercise right now, but maybe down the road if this still doesnt work.

i already eat a lot of protein, i think -- at least balanced mini-meals all have protein in them, but ill focus on protein, even more water and HIIT - I hope this works!! I also HATE to weigh in but i guess i should every day so that i see the fluctuations (blugh).

any other suggestions or things that worked for others = GREATLY appreciated.

one other thing i thought of, and you probably already do this..

are you weighing in first thing in the morning after you pee? thats when I do it because I can add five pounds of water weight thru the end of the day. I also weigh nekkid.:p

Hee-hee, I do the same thing, Kate! :D

Mee too! Whatever I weigh in the morning, I'll be 5 to 10 pounds heavier by bedtime! Skyler, You have not plateau-ed again. It's very simple and you have already stated the answer. You mentioned people saying you look slimmer? You are building muscle and losing fat. I know you want the fat to go away faster but the fact is that as you increase the muscle your body WILL start burning faster! Just keep it up and quit stressing about the numbers so much!

I have to agree with April on this one!
