I can not do push ups for the life of me...

I don't know what it is, but I just really have a hard tme with push ups. My dad says it's because of my long arms, but still I should be able to do over 8-10...

I started working out in mid feb., and I've made advancements in my DB rows (started at 30 lbs, now I'm at 70lbs) Curls (started at 15lbs, now I'm at 25lbs) Sit ups (started with nothing, now I sit up w/ a 25 lb plate), DB punches (started at 30, now at 40), etc.

but I'm still under 10 push ups. go figure, lol.

it's not like I'm that heavy either, right now I'm only around 155-160lbs (6' tall).

Standard Checklist for weak and non-advancing of push ups is...

-Weak core
-Weak shoulders
-Improper form
-Over/under training of the chest
-Or all of the above

First I wouldn't mind having a look at your current program.

Regardless, it doesn't hurt to focus on these things.

I would work on implementing some solid core work into your program as the lack of the support can be crucial in push up advancement. I would also check the article below to learn more about the role your shoulders play in this style of movement.

I agree that core is crucial, and with Leip's other suggestions.

There are a number of strategies you can do to increase your pushup ability. First and foremost, you need to make sure you do them consistently. Other tips:
1. Perform as many traditional pushups as you can, then drop to your knees and continue to perform modified pushups
2. Perform incline pushups where you use a step or a bench as a platform for your hands. This will reduce the weight that you're pushing up.
3. Have a partner stand over you, holding a towel that is under your hips. The partner will act as a spotter, pulling the towel to give you additional help as you struggle.

Just keep plodding at them and make sure you have your form down. Other exercises that increase strength in your chest are going to help with them as well.

Dont be put off because you cant do many its just one of those things. I can do pullups for peanuts but I realize that is because of other issues. Can you think of any that may apply to you.

What you need to do is identify the problem and rectify it.
