Huge Hips!

My hips are huge! and are totally out of proportion to the rest of my body.
I know you can't 'spot reduce', but is there anything I can do to maybe reduce the size of them.
Will losing weight make any difference or do you reckon that's just my genetic make-up, maybe?

It's going to have to take loss of weight. Will it comes from you hips? I don't know, it's really based on your genetics.

This is not my first time losing weight, so I have some experience. A few years ago before I had my first son, I lost a total of 37 pounds. I have very wide hips. Many women on my father's side of the family also are very hippie, but they were all a little overweight also. When I lost the 37 pounds, i was 130-132 depending on the day. I worked out, alternating workouts between my legs and arms on different days 3x's a week and always did some abs and 15 to 30 mins of cardio at the end. I am 5'2 so this was on the higher end of fit weight for me. I was very fit, and my hips tremendously reduced in size, but I believe it was because I did a full body workout and became pretty toned. I learned then that you cannot spot reduce, but once you are losing the weight and things start to tighten up, your figure does show itself off. I always lose weight in my rear first, making me look very unproportional, but then the weight will begin to fall off everywhere else, and then SURPRISE! There's my @$$! LOL! I can't (weight) to see my rear disappear now, because I know what happens next.

Haha! xD
Thanks for that :)

The answer is simple - to burn a lot of calories around this area. Hip muscle is the largest muscle of the body. Here are some tips to tone these:

o The exercises that help in toning your hips include strength training & cardio workouts. The cardio activities should be done at least for 30 to 45 minutes 4 times a week. These form the warm up sessions. In case you are yet willing to workout further, then follow it up with the strength training exercises.

o The strength training exercises help in developing lean muscles out of excess fat in your body. Also crunches are very effective in this endeavor.

o Exercises such as squats, leg press and hip abductors are also helpful.

o The other way to lose weight is avoiding the use of elevators. It is better using the stairs. It helps you lose fat from hip & thigh area.

o Your diet must include large amount of fruits & vegetables. Avoid taking bananas. Also have 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday. It helps in eliminating the toxins from the body which is really helpful during the workout sessions.

Apart from all these measures you may try natural diet supplements like the acai berry that helps you suppress the appetite. They do not starve you and have no side. It boosts your metabolism and also increases the overall energy of the body.

You can't burn calories "around a certain area". It doesn't work that way. And working specific body parts doesn't mean you'll lose weight in those body parts.

Fat loss is mostly genetic. Where you lose fat from first is your body's choice. The more fat you lose, the more it will start to come from different areas of the body. Most people (men and women) tend to lose fat in the belly, hips, and butt last. Some people are lucky and lose in those areas first, or lose more evenly around their bodies ... but not the bulk of people dieting.

Eating a healthy diet and getting lots of OVERALL exercise (not focusing on one muscle group) will help speed fat loss and minimize muscle loss.

Yeah..false. You can't spot reduce. What is wrong with bananas? Again you can't spot reduce. Acai Berry is a hyped fruit with no where near the proof for those claims so no on that one. Did I mention you can't spot reduce? Fat doesn't 'become' muscle. And in case you missed it you can't spot reduce.

Well I think it just depends, right now my hips are really big with me gaining weight, but they are also just big naturally. Even if I lose all my weight I would still never, ever fit into any pant size smaller than a 5/7 because that is just how they are. But, once you lose weight in general you will lose weight all over, even there.

I agree, but the banana thing is kinda true, Bananas are higher on the glycemic index and will spike your blood sugar say more than a pear, because a banana is naturally higher in sugar that increases the amount of insulin your body releases, thus causing cravings and binges. But, obviously many people lose weight while eating bananas, I think everything in moderation is Key.

I like Peak 8 interval training 3X a week. It only takes 20 minutes and produces HGH (human growth hormone) naturally for 2 hours afterward. Be careful to only it a little lean protein after the workout so as not to interfere with the HGH production. While others are paying for injections of HGH, you can get your body to produce it for free and watch your whole body shape change. HGH should really be renamed, the Maintenance Hormone, once you're grown.

Jericho,
One can't spot reduce, yet you can "target train". This is the reason bodybuilders perform many different exercises to build out their back. They perform many different exercises to even build a small muscle like their biceps.
Training a muscle from a variety of angles is "taget training." This, she can do in concert with cardio and a sound eating plan.
I've seen individuals lose weight without lifting weights and their body looked like it went from a large size to a small size pear. In addition, their skin was jiggly. A "targeted" resistance training program could have made a difference in the subcutaneous fat underneath their skin. This is not the definition of spot reducing. However, resistance training can possibly (genetics being the key) make a significant difference in the shape of one seeking to lose weight and the fat underneath the skin.
