HR Monitor - Accurate Calorie Counter?

I wear a Polar HR monitor while working out. I find it very motivational. I have programmed in my age, weight, etc. and am using the calorie calculator feature to track how many calories I burn and would like to know if HR Monitors are fairly accurate, say +/- 10%? Anyone have any thoughts, read any articles, studies?

When I check the calorie calculators online or at the gym they vary substantially - as much as +/- 20-40% from the readings I get on my HR monitor.

TIA - SM

I wore a Polar HRM with the same feature for a while myself. I actually changed from one that didn't have to one that did and for some odd reason I actually gained a little weight and body fat in the period that I used it, I am sure I just spent too much time worrying about what it said instead of working a little harder. I know this really doesn't answer your question in anyway and I would like to appologize for that I just figured someone may be interested in this little bit of info.

Hi everybody, first time poster here. I’ve been using a sort of mapping system by . It is really useful to me because I can see other people’s bike routes and the best part is calculating the calories I can burn. ( it here: ). Just wondering if anybody has a calorie counter they recommend?

NO device is perfect, but the Polar heart rate monitors are pretty accurate, IME.

The most accurate would be to wear something like a BodyBugg ... but failing that a HRM is much more accurate than the cardio machine, which does nothing more than estimate. :)

Keeping a daily log of all food consumed and a good workout plan is key any successful diet. I use the free at to calculate all my meals.
