How to get out of a rut?

Hey guys, here's my predicament. I've been consistently losing weight for a little over a year now. My starting weight was around 200lbs, and my lowest I got to was 130lbs. It was a long, slow journey, losing maybe a pound a week. Since Thanksgiving/Christmas I've gone back up to 140-145lbs and haven't been able to lose it again. I didn't over-indulge or anything, just didn't stick to my normal diet of <1000 calories a day and no carbs/sugars. I ate mostly veggies and even ate less than anyone else at the table.

It took me a long while to go from 145 to 130 the first time, but now it just seems like all my efforts are for naught. I exercise (vigorous biking) for about 45 minutes a day, accompanied by sit-ups, push ups and some light weight training to tone. I've been back on my diet since Christmas, even working out twice a day on days off, and I still haven't been able to go under the 140lbs mark. I do have increased muscle mass, and that might be the cause of some weight gain, but it shouldn't have appeared suddenly Christmas morning.

Any tips, tricks or advice on this matter would put my mind at ease and my body in better health! Thank you!

Getting out in a rut is not easy. However, you just need to change your exercise routine. Loosing weight is hard as well as gaining weight. I know it's unpleasant, understanding that you would like to be on a path toward wellness, innovation and inventive happiness, but in reality you are spinning your wheels in some kind of quicksand. Occasionally, a small attitude adjustment can get you going, or a little inspiration. But quite often, altering your routine is not enough. Here are some ideas for how you can get free from a rut, seated in observation and action.

How to get out of a rut step No. 1 – Listen to your body

Sometimes, being stuck in a rut stems from your physical reality. If you are a sedentary desk worker, you may not even be aware of this, as your brain floats in your skull, illuminated by light of a video screen and unnatural fluorescent lights. Posture suffers as fingers fly over the keyboard. Sometimes, all of this has to stop and you have to take notice. Stand up, move around, and if things have gotten bad, consider ramping up your off-work exercise program. And see your doctor and/or a mental health professional if you need help.

How to get out of a rut step No. 2 – Be realistic with yourself

You aren’t going to solve this rut problem all at once. Don’t become discouraged, as it takes many small steps to break out of this negative spiral. Radical shift out is more likely to lead you from one rut into another. You’ll need to level yourself out with a series of small levers, altering your angle on existence by degrees so that your consciousness can take in each facet slowly. Go too fast and you won’t appreciate the journey. Life is about the going. You aren’t suddenly there.

How to get out of a rut step No. 3 – Feed your passions

WiseBread notes a recent report by HR consultant Towers Watson. According to the study, 65 percent of U.S. workers are not engaged by the work they do. Unfortunately, most workers don’t have the flexibility to change their job at a moment’s notice. As such, it is vitally important that the time outside of work be spent in pursuits that enrich the spirit. Drinking yourself into a stupor merely distracts you from this reality. Spend time doing the things and pursuing the hobbies you enjoy. If you have a family, spend quality time with them. Even if you can’t afford to go to a museum or even the movies, get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors. Stop thinking about work. You are a human being with a deep need to relate to others.

How to get out of a rut step No. 4 – Break new ground

If you’re deep in a rut, consider traveling to a place you’ve never seen. Ideally, if you can sleep there and then open your eyes to a new day, there’s a symbolic spiritual reawakening enacted. However, if you can’t do this, focus on small things. Pick up a sport you’ve been meaning to try. Paint. Write. Sing. Do what you’ve been putting off, whether it’s because you haven’t had time, or were too afraid to try. Newness frightens boredom.

How to get out of a rut step No. 5 – Stop blaming others

Ultimately, you must answer for your actions – not to others, but to yourself. If you’re in a rut, you must know that you are the problem. You have the power to change yourself. That’s a power no one else possesses. Your powers must be applied to sculpting you.

How to get out of a rut step No. 6 – Give yourself credit

If you’re taking small steps to get yourself out of a harmful routine, give yourself credit. Emotional upheaval is draining, and you should treat yourself well. Relax a little after some of the heavy lifting. Even if you’ve only changed one thing, that change can lead to bigger and better things. Recognize that you are exercising your own power to make your world a better place.
