how often to work out abs

Hi, so what are some good ab exercises for someone who eats 5-6 healthy meals a day, lifting heavy weights on chest and back and legs etc who wants to have a 6pack?
Ive heard you can do weightlifting on your abs and obliques and lower back and they will get big just like any other muscle, but ive also heard that it is NOT good to do this as your core muscles are for posture and you should do posture strengthening exercises like 'the plank' or lots of leg raises and such. Can a professional give me a straight answer?

First off, to see your "six pack" you need very low bodyfat. That means your diet needs to be adjusted to obtain this. Abs are made in the kitchen as they say. Also, when you do ab exercises, you contract all your ab muscles, which means there is no upper abs or lower abs exercises. I see nothing wrong with weighted ab exercises or doing exercises such as planks. I think both types should be incorporated into your workout. Remember also that abdominals are a muscle group, like any other muscle group in the body. They should get a least 48 hours rest before being trained again. No, I am not a professional (yet). But we have some on this forum and some who think they are :) I'm sure if my info is incorrect, someone will correct me. Good luck with your goals :)

i second what jpc said, im no proffesional either, but i think i got enough knowledge now to say he is correct.

What those guys said.

Basically your abs are just muscle like every other muscle in your body and if you want them bigger then work them. Also (like has been said), if you want them to show (6 pack) then you have to lose body fat.

no more than 3x a week. new comers should be fine with 2x a week...but diet and shedding bodyfat is pivotal to developing a washboard stomach.
