How much time in the gym

I am just getting back into working out I used to go four times a week for 2hrs a day. I think that was a little too much so how much time should I spend in the gym on weight training? I will do three days of running/cardio also. thanks you guys have been helpful. I am not trying to lose weight just gain muscle mass.

I go 5 days a week, 90 minutes a day. I do chest and triceps on monday, wednesday and friday, then back and biceps on tuesday, thursday, and sometimes saturday. I'll take 15-20 minutes for cardio on 1 day and same for legs on a different day, or sometimes I'll just do a full leg day. On the weekends I usually rest or I'll focus on abs on one of the resting days.

If I'm doing HIIT training its 15mins Plus 5mins warm up and 5 min cool down.

weight training full body = 45mins
bady part training = 30mins

The Gym's make me laugh....why not just train old school and hit the weights on a make shift bench out in the snow. When i was growing up I have seen some nasty mean dudes working out in the worst kind of weather. Only wussies went to the Gym then. Just hit the street and run....buy some dumbells and make your own bench. Maybe even have a friend push down on your back while doing push-ups. Weight lifting and excercise should build character along with muscle. I would like to see men be men again! So lift hard play hard...hell maybe even drink a six pack and punch your best friend in the face...enough of this pretty boy crap!

Klink31 - you wont get very far here with that attitude.

If your serious about weight training a gym is the best place. I'm not going to list the 100's of reasons that a gym is better than a make shift bench and some cheap dumbells, but I will say this...

When a powerlifter, Olympic lifter or body builder that works only with dumbells on a makeshift bench wins a major world event, I'll eat my gym membership.

Back to the original question:
Reasons to limit your workout to 45-60 minutes per session:
1. Some studies show that after around 45-60 minutes of strenuous exercise for the average individual higher levels of cortisone are produced. Corisone is a hormone that in a grossly simplified definition tends to signal the body to store fat (to sustain long sessions of strenuous exertion).
2. If you are really working at maximum effort you should not be able to sustain it for much more than 60 minutes without puking or passing out anyways.
3. If you are trying to gain muscle mass you should be able to create plenty of stimulation for growth in 60 minutes without doing so much damage (to specific muscle groups, your entire system and your CNS) that you need excessive time to recover.

Finally, always remember nutrition, rest and consistancy are more important than your specific exercise routine for long term results.
