How many gyms are in the U.S.?

I know it seems like a simple question, but I can't really find a good answer online.

If anyone has info on this I would really appreciate it.

I saw 29,000 somewhere, but that was a few years old and I'm also not sure if that includes gyms in hotels, apartments, etc.

hard to really get an accurate number as new ones open just as fast as old ones close. I can say that we have 27k in our database (www.fitness.com/find_gym/), if that helps you get closer to your answer.

Yeah that definitely helps, thank you. I'm assuming that number doesn't include fitness rooms that are parts of hotel chains or apartment complexes right?

So I took that 27,000 number (which ive seen other places so I assume it's somewhat accurate), and I wanted to see how many of those gyms were major chains.

Turns out after adding up the number of gyms in the U.S. that are part of big chains (golds, equinox, life fitness, ymca, bally, crunch, la fitness, planet fitness), there are only about 4,000.

Does that mean that 23,000 out of the 27,000 gyms in the U.S. are smaller local gyms? I would've thought it was the opposite. Thanks for any help.
