How long do you leave between your meal and your training?

When you eat, how long do you leave it between eating and training?

Ive been leaving it an hour, but some times I feel very bloated after a meal and this affects my lifting/cardio :(

Interesting question... anyone who knows this for sure ?

I've heard a few things, and I think it depends on what it is you eat... Complex carbs should be consumed about 2 hours before training I think (rice, potatoes, saghetti,... ). And since mostly these are the main ingredients in a meal, I suggest you wait 2 hours before starting to train.
But then you might want to eat something extra right before the workout, some protein (shake) and fast carbs (banana).

1-2 hours for a full meal. see how one responds to make your own judgements.

i train first thing in the morning so i drink something quick and start lifting about 20 minutes after.

Great thanks guys.
Its normally at least 1.5 hours so sounds like Im doing things ok really, I try to spread it out to 2 hours as that makes me feel better during training.

I have only started training again, mostly weights, and i leave it about 2 hours before i train after eating a meal.

I do take a protein shake and a banana before every session and i think it makes a huge difference to my energy levels!

I also take a shake when i finish training! Not sure if this is correct?

Fat Burning (Aerobic Lipolysis): This is by far the slowest system. It is, in fact, too slow to contribute extensively to energy production during exercise (in fact, if you ever deplete your glycogen stores so much that the body has to rely on lipolysis for its energy, your muscle movement slows down dramatically). In order to mobilize fat, a "triglyceride" has to be broken down into fatty acids, bound to proteins, and other time-consuming feats. The good news, is that lipid (fat) metabolism is the main way that your glycogen stores are replenished after exercise. That's why it can be useful to work out in the morning on an empty stomach and wait about an hour after your workout before eating - your glycogen stores are more depleted by the end of your workout and you burn more fat afterward.

i did exactly that years ago and i did lose weight. but, i then realized that i didnt want to lose bodyweight, i wanted to lose bodyfat.

so i got myself kinda "big" again and this time i ate before cardio and after cardio and did HIIT instead of low intensity, long duration cardio.

so far i've only lost 3 lbs of bodyweight but almost 5 points off my bodyfat %. its working a whole lot better than not eating around cardio sessions.

many are starting to realize this fact i'm beginning to see. :)

Interesting. He also mentions an exception to this rule, being when you work so hard that you smell ammonia, you should eat immediately after a workout.

I only workout with high intensity work. I go on an empty stomach, but I usually eat right afterwards. Just because if I go that long I have a tendency to forget to eat and then start grazing pretty heavily later in the day.

In general, you'll maximize your fat loss if you wait about an hour after your workouts before eating. The exception, in my view, is when you smell ammonia. Ammonia is essentially nitrogen, and that sensation after a workout is a signal that you've raised your cortisol levels enough to trigger the breakdown of amino acids by the liver (gluconeogenesis). When the body needs energy, it metabolizes glycogen, then fat, then protein. If one isn't fast enough, it goes down the list. But if it's going to feed on protein, you want it to go after something other than muscle tissue. So if you smell ammonia, you should have a protein and carbohydrate containing supplement immediately after your workout, preferably along with a protein stimulating supplement such as L-Leucine (whey protein is about 20-25% Leucine).

Have you ever gotten to this point? I'm just curious. I don't want to be too graphic, but I work my butt off during a workout and with the sweat and all, well, you get the picture. It's gets awesomely bad, but it won't burn my nose off like cleaning agent. I'm just wondering exactly what ammonia on a body smells like.

Was that too much information:)?

Also what are you eating immediately before and after your workouts?

Interesting stuff guys, thanks for your time there DeQuendre. Ive never got to that stage to be fair.
Basically what I do is finish work at 5:30pm, go home and eat (which is done by 7pm) then I wait until 8:30 and go down the gym.
I train quite hard, as I like to keep the workout under 45 minutes, but I havent got to that stage, and having a full stoumach after my meal helps out.
Ill then have a shower etc, so that about 1 hour later I have a protein/carb shake and a snack before bed.

no i never got to that point.

ppl are learning that its not the amount of calories you burn in and around a workout that matter most. its the total amount of calories burned vs consumed over the course of the day.

i treat my cardio the same as with weights. having a liquid protein/carb drink before before and after. :)
