Hi,

In last one year I ve lost around 90lbs of weight but I am still left with 60lbs more to go. I was very exicted to lose all the weight dis year..it all seemed easy now. I was doing workout 4-5 days a week.

Now, I ve been diagnosed with an ailment called prolapse...which means they will have to remove my uterus by performing some surgery. Hence, docs have adviced me not to do any more exercise..and atleast for a month I shall be on bed rest.

All d dreams have shattered...that hope.. dat zest to live life...everything has fallen apart...

Can we still lose weight widout doing much exercise? I am not suppose to do any lower body sport/exercise.I am 32 yrs old female.

Poor you! Tough break!

But losing weight is 70% diet and 30% exercise. The real issue is to develop a new but constructive life pattern while you recover from your surgery. Use the time you would otherwise have been working out doing something else - read, study, take a easy stroll somewhere, catch up with friends, mess about online.

And remember, life is long. These set backs are just a 'speed hump' and you'll be back on track soon enough. In 3 months time you will have moved on from today and be in a better place.

If nothing else I think it's really important that you just don't start thinking "well I cant exercise, so let's eat cake" like some people I know have. You could even just try to do maintenance calories in that time. It would actually be good practice to make sure you will be able to eat right to keep the weight off later. As long as you don't gain any weight in that time (or even if it's only a couple pounds) I wouldn't beat yourself up over it.
And if you do want to keep trying to lose weight, just remember that you don't have to eat as low under your maintenance to lose weight as you won't be burning as many calories during the day.
I also love the idea of taking up some new hobby or spending your extra time in a new constructive way.
Either way, good luck with your continued success and with your surgery!

Any more exercise ever? That doesn't seem right. I've never heard of a doctor saying that after surgery you can never exercise again - and in fact most will tell you that moderate movement will help you heal faster.

If I were you, I'd revisit that with your doctor and make sure you understand clearly his instructions. A month or two of no exercising will make things difficult - I won't lie. It means you will have to control your eating much better becuase it will be the sole source of your weight loss. But as you heal from your surgery, you should be able to slowly return to a moderate level of exercise.

Well Kara...

not ever..but post surgery exercise is restricted atleast for 6 months and plus I have to be careful about lower body exercises lifelong as my abdominal muscles r weak of wot I ve been told. Walking n moderate work is alwayz allowed I guess. but is it possible to lose weight just by walking? umm I hope I eat less..

If you have to rest and recover, then you have to focus even more on your calorie intake since you can't add to your calories out though exercise.

You can't really lose much weight on just exercise without calories reduction. It's calories in vs calories out. I'll say this. I do an office job and I don't go walking, I don't do other exercise and I still lost about 30 pounds cause I did lower my calorie intake.

@Spinner

Thanku so much for the optimism! I feel so much better now...really:)

Yes, I think you are right...dats wot I ve been doing in last one week..eating more out of frustration plus not exercising! I shall change this attitude now...tnx for d help dude:)

Sorry to hear that. But, that doesn't mean you can't exercise ever again. You just have to take some time off. I know quite a few women who have had their uterus removed and most of them are more than able to exercise, just like anybody else. So, keep your chin up. It won't last forever.

If it makes you feel better, I dropped 70 lbs - and the last 50 lbs included zero exercise. Exercise itself is not necessary for weight loss - what you eat is a much bigger factor - however, for most people, exercising helps them stay on track with their diet.

So your weight loss goals aren't ruined, it just means you'll really have to stay on top of your eating to meet your goals.

Also - Omega here lost weight 'just' by walking without more intense exercise. And I myself have tested that I can eat more and still lose weight by the 'light house work + not sitting down after work' plan. There are studies now showing that exercise does not have as big an impact on calories burned as simple things like getting up and walking around regularly during the day, or doing other light, non-exercise activities that are not sitting down ;) Also, for whatever reason, it's been shown that the the more TV you watch, the fewer calories you tend to burn. Apparently the brain uses up 40% of your BMR... Well, according to a book I read which I haven't firmly fact checked, lol.

Um, anyway, I'm rambling, but to sum up - don't panic! You're still okay, not being able to exercise may be frustrating, but it doesn't mean you're stuck at your current weight with no hope of progress :D

Yeah like other people already said, you just need to rest for awhile then you can start training again. And losing weight is a combination of both exercise and diet, both parts are very important.
