How do you get support? How do you support?

What do the people around you do to make you feel motivated and better about being you?? What is the best way to support someone??

I have had so much support on this forum. The people here are wonderful and upbeat and so informative!! I want to carry this on to the world on my side of the computer;) Just wanted to see what has made you feel good and how you play it forward:D

For me I just love the fact that the men and women on this forum are fighting the same battle as I am.

Looking at it like this drives me on to absolutely achieve my weight goals because I see us all in the struggle pushing eachother on to never give up.

Also I'm not just fighting for my happiness no.

I want others to be happy and reach their weight loss goals too so I hope to serve as an inspiration to people when I reach my weight loss goal and have my before and after topic with pictures.

I'm talking about people that aren't even on the forum yet that will make the decision to lose their weight when I have reached my goals seeing my before and after topic and being inspired by it as Ironman who lost 235lbs inspired me.

Be an inspiration by sharing your story. Tell your friends, family, etc. who are trying to lose weight that you were once in there shoes at the beginning. Tell them how good it feels now to have a new, healthier lifestyle. Show them that it is very possible to accomplish great things.

Also tell them to give you a call or shoot you and e-mail when things start to get rough. Tell them what you did because, most likely, you were once in that exact same situation.

Talk to them every now and then just to see how their progress is going. Make sure to help keep their spirits up. Those who are most successful generally are not alone. Everyone wants support so don't hesitate to give it.

I think it's great that you want to pay it forward. Keep it up!

If you were my friend telling me that, you'd probably be best served to have somoene you didn't like start your car for you because I wouldn't motivate me it would just piss me off. The "if I can do it, you can do it" approach is a little too preachy - everyone is different... and responds to different things

Reformed anything make me want to go completely postal...

The best way to support someone is to be a good example, without being pedantic about it... if you're going out to lunch or dinner, choose a restaurant with healthier options, instead of going out for multiple cocktails, suggest an art gallery or museum or something a little more active where it's not sitting and overly consuming calories.

I agree. It's better to play it low-key. If you go on and on about it, you're just going to annoy the hell out of everyone. If someone asks you how you did it or for advice, that's different.

I always say "Give advice only when asked." It has worked so well for me. The best advice you can give people is silent advice by modeling the behavior you want someone to follow you in. i.e. You want your husband or wife to exerrcise or eat better, you eat better and exercise more. They will notice without you saying anything. Good question!

I know what you mean! If somebody says to me, "If I can do it, you can do it", I would feel like they were being preachy. But I could look at someone else and think, "If you can do it, I can do it", and I'd feel totally motivated. Does that make sense? Like, I'm allowed to think of somebody as a good example, but I'd be put off if that person were to tell me that they're a good example.

I found out that it is not easy to get support all the time. When I deciced to change my live by losing some weight and doing more sports all my friends and my husband were very supportive at first. But then at least the behavior of my husband changed. I stopped eating all these fatty stuff and this really bothers him. And it is understandable, because I usually don't eat what he cooks anymore. But what can I do? I really want to lose some weight and that is why I have to do that.

have you had a conversation with him about what you want -and ask him to change what he cooks?

Fat isn't your enemy - you don't have to go completely fat free -there's no reason why you cant enjoy some of his tasty treats that he makes... just watch your portion sizes...

Howdy Mishi,
Great thread I just stumbled acrossed it!I think you nailed it pretty good, the people I met on here that share the same battle and are losing and sharing ideals recipies and even a shoulder at times is the BEST motivation I have EVER had. Also seeing and reading people that has lost weight and how keeps me going.
I like to think I support others as they have supported me because it really brightens my day to finally catch a break and hop on here and see people wondering how your doing wishing you a great week reminding you your goals and what not.I don't get very much support around here my hubby is skinny my mom is skinny and the rest have other things on there mind so there is no talk or conversations about dieting eating right exersices ect.So another words THIS FORUM ROCK'S!:nopity::lurk5:

Yeah I have talked to him many times about the food situation. He always seemed to understand me afterwards, but later he was kind of pissed of again when I didn't like his meal. That is really sad. I told him that there are many options which aren't so fatty and he could try them out. But he hasn't tried them out so far. Maybe I should cook something for him and show him that healthy food could be tasty as well.

Great idea... i think too many people get stuck in the mindset that "diet food" is all steamed vegetables and bland boiled chicken - it's really anything but that...

My support is the knowledge I gain from doing the research to better myself. How I gain the the knowledge isn't important and I don't necessarily need to interact with another person to feel better about it. The payoff for me is being able to make better choices based on what I learn and as I start to look and feel better I know it's the right way to do it for me.

You were right. I cooked for him last sunday and he really enjoyed the meal I had prepared. I made chicken with potatos and some carots and as a desert a fruit salad. I tried to use as less fat as possible and I was also surprised that you almost don't need any fat to cook a great meal.
Then we talked again about his misunderstanding about me losing weight. And I really think that I was successful this time. I think he understood that food doesn't have to be fatty to be tasty. We'll see the what kind of food he is going to prepare during the next days and weeks...I'll let you know!

Good luck!!! Cooking lowfat is easier as you go and Pam non-stick spray has been extremely helpful for me! lol
Glad your hubby is willing to work with you:)

I am so happy. It is really unbelievable but my husband really cooks healthier food since I have cooked for him last weekend. And I think he really understands me now. And it doesn't bother him anymore if I don't eat so much cake and candies anymore. Well I have learned that you really have to talk to your partner and if he still doesn't want to support you cook with him. SHow him that healthy food can be tasty!

Love support

I am new to this but love the idea of support when it comes to losing weight. I've been losing weight just recently. I couldn't believe today I was dancing around with my four little ones by the christmas tree working up my heart rate to rock'n round the christmas tree and we had so much fun. I have kids around me all day so it's nice to find a place to talk to people who are going through a life change too. Thanks.

I absolutely love this forum, and im glad i found it! My friends help me out a lot but its good to come here and talk to others who are turning their lives around positively. I haven't seen any negative advice at all and everyone values everyones opinions at this forum. I also like giving my input to someone in need, and it makes me feel better about myself knowing that they are taking advice to further improve their health.

Motivating

I get motivation from (you said it Mishi) watching what other people can do. Last year I was on a different forum and found someone much larger than me who'd competed in several 5k's and a triathlon. Wow!

So I had to give up the "too fat to run" excuse and move one.

I agree with
I haven't seen any negative advice at all and everyone values everyones opinions at this forum.

I've seen lots and lots of positives here, coming from everybody. Thanks every body!

As for motivating other people, I don't think I've done much of that yet. Soon...
