How do choose who to train?

For my assignment in Certificate IV, I am required to train 3 people - one for aerobic fitness, another for concurrent training and one for resistance training.

Well what I did was message people of Facebook, ones that go to the gym I go to, ones a do boot camp with and a few others who I know do exercise. I didn't know so many people would be interested in having a free trainer, doing what I tell them to do!

Well I need to limit it to 3. They have to meet a certain criteria for the FIA and the ones that replied do. How do I choose who to train? How do I know they will be dedicated etc.

Please help me! Thanks!

I'd go for the ones that you know the closest, if these are mostly strangers choose the ones that live near you if possible as face to face is going to be a lot easier.

I'm guessing they all have to be face to face anyway though for this assignment?

Possibly be a good idea to avoid the people you know have been to the gym on and off for years and never made any progress, even with the help they might not stay dedicated, especially if it's not costing them anything.

I had a personal trainer for a few months about 2 years back and the fact I was paying for it motivated me, as well as the fact that somebody was monitoring my weight and body fat% reasonably regularly (they would know if i'd be slacking)

I'd also say keep some as backups incase any of them drop out or get sick.

I'm not a trainer or anything (considering it for the future perhaps) these are just suggestions that seem to make sense to me personally :)

The ones that have replied so far I do know from the gym that I go to so that part is easy. One that has replied is from Boot Camp and she didn't last v long as she fell ill but is OK now. Apparently she auditioned for the Biggest Loser and she said it was hard.

Another one is someone I don't know, however goes to the gym I go to and I think he is a flatmate of another girl at the gym. Disadvantage with him is that because he is a regular at the gym and it would be for resistance training, he might not want to change his routine.

I just don't know what to do. My PT is back next week so I can also get his advice!

Thanks :)

I'd say choose the 3 that you can do the most for, and who will let you do the most for them. I'm assuming that the client you'll be doing concurrent training with will be doing resistance and cardio with you? Maybe the person who auditioned for the Biggest Loser is ideal for this role. Maybe the guy who goes to the gym regular and (by the sounds of it) does resistance training on his own needs someone to show him the importance of cardio and to make it enjoyable for him.

I'd recommend that if you've got this selection of people to choose from, organise 15min consultations with anyone interested so that you can discuss where they're at, what they want to achieve and how you can help them with that. If they show up to the consultation, that alone is a sign that they'll bother to show up to sessions. Then, based on your consultations, work out which people you'd be able to work with most successfully.

Chose the three who you feel are the most motivated to change/keep up with a plan- take a chat with them about their work commitments, the last thing you want is to fail because someones kid had a party they needed to plan for/they had to spend every other day abroad for work. You need people who are focused on training and really willing to do whatever they can.

Also take a look at it from another angle, not just what your wanting to do, but what you think would end up stopping them from achieving your aims. You seem to have gone some way already in answering that question but maybe ask them- see if they can answer (if they don't have an answer they are not taking it seriously) then discuss what you and they can do to change that.

Maybe have a shortlist and whittle that down into a confirmed list. Its your course, you need to learn as much as you can and also get as good grades as you can.

Good luck with it!

I did my Cert IV with the FIA last year too :) I would suggest getting clients who are willing to take on your suggestions and who will let you analyse their diet and exercise and everything. Someone who is really set in a routine may not be the best person.
