how can yall stomach some of this stuff?

Well after making up a grocery list of foods Ill be eating from now on (based on a lot of info from this site and links I found on it) I went to the store and got the following:

+ Tuna - I like tuna, I like to make sandwhiches on lightly toasted wheat bread. However im used to putting in mayo for taste, but I know mayo is very fattening and I probably shouldnt use it. Any other ideas to make it more tasty.

+ Peaches - Cant get enough of them

+ Pineapple - Love these too

+ Apples - Love them green apples, no problems here.

+ Strawberries - One of my fav's.

+ Fat free cottage cheese - Now this, I just cannot stand. I put some strawberries in it, and some splenda, and just coudl not stomach it. Its not SO bad with a huge strawberry chunk on the spoon as well, but the taste is just awefule, i had to force myself to swallow.

+ Splenda - Bought mainly to sweeten the cottage cheese.

+ Fat free italion salad dressing - I like this stuff, goes well with my bagged lettuce.

+ boneless, skinless chicken - 4 pounds for 10 bucks. Gonna be one of my main meal makers. Have a number of combo's planned out, including grilled chicken salad with the italion dressing.

+ crab meat - imitation crab meat. terrible stuff, makes me sick and im throwing it away.

So how do you guys work your diet? Do you make yourself eat anything you just cant stand? For me its just that nasty cottage cheese, i can hardly bear it but I know its supposed to be good for you. Any ideas what I can use to replace it? yogurt? And what Can I do about the tuna issue?

Tuna- try dicing carrots or celery and mixing it in. Some people I know like vinegar. Unfortunately nothing will replace the "moistness" or lathering of the mayo. Fortunately... I can't stand mayo so I dont have the problem. ;)

Usually I eat right out of the can. But I sometimes mix it in stuffing to make wraps out of using plain old soft tortilla shells. I make a stuffing, throw in a couple cans of tuna, chop up celery and onions and sometimes carrots... makes good filling if you dont mind the smell of tuna. Oh.. make sure its chunk light tuna in water you're packing away... Albicore has a higher mercury content.

Fat free cottage cheese- No clue. Stuff's disgusting, fat free or not. Since protein is the only nutrient worth consuming though, why not double up on other protein sources and cut that junk out?
Crab Meat- theres a ton of seafood high in protein and low in fat. What are you trying to do? Burn fat or gain muscle? Shrimp is great, but its high in sodium and cholesterol. You can try canned lump crab meat or canned baby shrimp. Sardines in water... though those are much higher in fat/cholesterol I think.

More protein- Wheat Germ? Little high in fat but thats okay because it gets you a ton of carbs, fiber and protein. Have no idea what you can do with it though... I eat it by the table spoon.

Eggs or just egg whites if you're watching cholesterol/fat.

Oh! Beans too. High in protein and in fiber. Watch for sodium and fat though if you're buying them canned. Healthier depending on what they're canned in.

(girlfriend always nags me about beans because I didnt believe her at first when she told me they were high in protein)

I've compiled some of my favorite ways to eat cottage cheese, from simple to complex:

Some people love it. Many more despise it. It’s generally agreed, however, that the curd is one of the best muscle foods. Personally, I don’t mind the taste and texture, and often eat it with just salt and pepper. But there are ways to make it taste much better, so for those of you who can’t choke the stuff down in its original form, read on.

First, the taste of different brands of cottage cheese varies greatly, so experiment with different types. Borden is one of my favorites, but it’s a little on the expensive side, so I often settle for some of the generic brands. Also, the lowfat varieties are often much more palatable than the nonfat ones, and the difference is only 1 gram of fat per half cup.

Alright, now for the tips. Adding just a couple of ingredients can dramatically alter the taste of cottage cheese, and many of these are simple and quick. These are all my favorites, but all of them certainly won’t appeal to everyone. Just cycle through them until you find one you like, and don’t be afraid to try one because it sounds odd. You might be pleasantly surprised.

With Splenda
Add Splenda. Simple as that. It tastes sort-of like yogurt, and if I have some nonfat plain yogurt, I’ll often add that into the mix. Cinnamon can also be used to add a twist.

With Pineapples
Add chopped pineapples. For some reason, the taste of cottage cheese and pineapples compliment each other very well, so just mix them together in a bowl and spoon them up.

As a salad dressing
Put a dollop on the side of your salad. The cottage cheese often compliments the taste of various veggies in the salad, especially tomatoes.

With Oatmeal
Do-up your oatmeal as usual, and add ½ cup of cottage cheese at the end. If you know how to make a tasty bowl of oatmeal regularly, this addition will make it even better.

Eastern Mediterranean Style
I have Israeli friends who wolf down more of the curd than your average Strongman competitor. Here’s a mixture that I learned from them. Spread some cottage cheese in a bowl, add chopped cucumbers and tomatoes around the edge, then drizzle olive oil over everything. Top with a can of tuna and enjoy.

Tortilla picante loca del pollo
This one is more of a main dish, so roll-up your sleeves, throw on your chef’s hat, and step up to the kitchen. Slice one grilled chicken breast in strips, then mix the following in a bowl: ½ cup cottage cheese, ½ cup salsa, 1 chopped roma tomato, 2 slices of onion (chopped), and a dash of salt, pepper, and ground cumin. Lay out 2 whole wheat tortillas, and layer them first with the chicken, then the mixture. Wrap them up, and put them in the oven for 5-10 minutes at 400-degrees, or nuke them in a pinch.

Dessert Fudge Shake
Throw these in a blender: ½ cup cottage cheese, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, a dash of spenda, 1 cup of ice, ½ cup water. Blend for 30 seconds, open the lid, throw in 1 oz. walnuts, and chop for a few seconds. It tastes like an ice cream dessert, no kidding.

EFA Shake
This one kills two birds with one stone: flax oil and cottage cheese. Separately, they can cause repulsion and dry-heaving. But throw them in a shake and they're magic. Put these in an electric blender: one scoop chocolate protein powder, 2 tablespoons whole flax seeds, ½ cup cottage cheese, 1 cup ice, couple of dashes Spenda. Blend on high for about a minute, until all of the flax seeds have been ground.

Fruit Shake
Take frozen berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or a mixture thereof), and mix them in an electric blender with 1 scoop vanilla or strawberry protein powder, 1 cup ice, ½ cup cottage cheese, some Splenda, and ½ cup of nonfat milk (or vanilla soymilk if you’re feeling kinky). Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Cheesecake Shake
Go buy some lowfat Jell-O cheesecake mix, and add one tablespoon to this mix: 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, ¾ cup of cottage cheese, 1 cup ice cubes, a dash of Splenda, and just enough water to mix it in a blender. To make this really special, add a couple of drops of vanilla extract and a graham cracker. Blend on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Blueberry Cheesecake
Use another tablespoon of the cheesecake Jell-O, and mix with the following in an electric blender: ¾ cup frozen blueberries, ¾ cup cottage cheese, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 cup ice, and ½ cup water. Blend on high for 30 secs, then pour into a bowl and top with about ½ inch of raw oat bran. Lightly press the oat bran into the mix , until it looks like a crust, then refrigerate for an hour.

Peanut Butter Cup Pudding
Put 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1 tablespoon chocolate fudge Jell-O mix, 2 tablespoons natty peanutbutter, ¾ cup cottage cheese, 1 cup ice cubes, and ½ cup water in a blender, blend on high for 1 minute. Pour it into a bowl, sprinkle with chopped walnuts, and refrigerate for an hour.

Well just for reference im 5'8" tall and 135 pounds. Im a light weight and my goal is to have a more toned body. I dont want to be big and bulky, as in muscular and heavy workouts. I want to shed some of that fat on my body covering my muscles tone from showing. Typically I normally eat fattening stuff like pizza, hotpockets, fast food, etc. and it really doesnt phase me and make me fat, not noticably anyway. It seems everytime I eat something like that Ill notice a little bit of fat gain, but ill go to sleep and by the time I wake up im back to normal. Even without a workout. Now I am working out lightly, using light weights at reps of 10 in 6 sets, this should help right?

In order for me to get what I want, should i be avoiding food with fats and cholesteral in them? I dig seafood especially shrimp, its sort of expensive though. anyone got some good healthy recipes for shrimp? Im not sure what wheat germ is, never heard of it before. And also, are eggs safe to eat? like say scrambled eggs, in a tortilla with a natural salsa?

Haha. Listening to you guys whine about cottage cheese makes me laugh. I love cottage cheese with a passion! haha. Sooo... i don't think that i have anything to share with making your cottage cheese experience better. I mean, seriously, i even put cottage cheese on toast. Doubtful if you guys would be able to do that though. haha.
Wheat germ is good. I find it in the cereal aisle of the grocery store in a glass jar. Kind of expensive. I make homeade granola cereal with it. Otherwise, i bet it would taste good in yogurt too.
As for the tuna... i wonder if lemon or just throwing in some spices will help with the flavoring if you don't like that. Any spices will do... maybe even lemon pepper or even red pepper flakes if you like hot things. Just experiment. Maybe you could just switch to low-fat or light mayo or whatever is out there. If you are just using a small amount every once-in-awhile it shouldn't be too bad for you.

i use wheat germ in my cottage cheese along with stevia and cinammon. let it get cold then devour. good stuff, i do 1 cup a day. :)

i'm not much of a tuna or cottage cheese eater, i cut up cooked chicken in my salads.

or hard cooked eggs whites...or nuts......or lowfat cheese.......or eat it with pita bread, if i don't have a protein.

Sometimes I force myself to choke down plain oatmeal for breakfast. It's not the total lack of taste that gets me, but the smell of soaked oats. If I sprinkle some cinnamon on it, though, it just smells like cinnamon. Still tastes like nothing, but it beats the alternative.

For the past two nights in a row Ive made myself a big grilled chicken salad with low carb italion dressing. talk about an awesome meal. I really like this italion dressing stuff and the label says its safe. Today In the morning I had a tuna sandwhich on wheat bread. I put a small amount of mayo to give it a little texture, a very small amount. Then for in between that and lunch I had some of my sliced pineapples. For lunch I had some more of the pineapples and another tuna sandwhich on wheat. Then for dinner I had 1 grilled chicken breast in the salad I made with Itaalion. ANd when I come back home from the tatoo parlor im gonna have an apple. I know not muchj variety today, but I was in a hurry this morning to get to work and just packed it up. What do you guys recommend for breakfast meals? ANd what are some good lunch meals as well?

Instead of that mayo, try plain yogurt. Remember, anything you eat has potential to be good with the right cookin. Last I checked, a lot of herbs are low in fat and high in all the good stuff. Don't forget about onions, garlic, and all the other essentials.

If you do not like it, do not eat it. There is lots of healthy stuff that I just can't stand and I do not even try. And I will never forgive my parents for making me eat cooked broccoli or carrots when they are obviously so much better raw. And they made me eat cauliflower and brussel sprouts which are not even food.

Go to your deli and pick up some fresh ham and turkey and chicken breasts and make some sandwhiches. Eat lots of eggs and mix in some of those big hunks of ham and turkey they always sell in the bulky meats section of the store. Or some red potataoes and eggs with meats and some vegatables- I do not think of my diet as limiting. Most of what I eat is delicious to everyone esle. I just cut out the crap.

I eat what I like and what happens to be good for me. If I find some new food that is healthy and tastes good, I work it in.

That's good advice from Mr. Ninjaface...

There is absolutely no reason at all to eat food that you do not enjoy. Personally, I enjoy cottage cheese, but if I didn't, I wouldn't include it in my diet. Find the healthy foods that you enjoy and concentrate on them. If you start eating foods you hate just because they are healthy you are just going to end up giving up and going back to eating crap. Stick with what works for you and don't bother force feeding yourself things that you don't enjoy.

Improving your eating habits and your exercise schedule even a little bit is better for your body if you can keep it up for the long run. Don't try to go overboard right away, you'll just end up giving up and returning to your old lifestyle. A little change over a long period of time is far better than a huge lifestyle change that you give up on two weeks later.

Good luck, and don't forget to enjoy yourself and your meals!

i cant agree with that. i will never tell someone that if they dont like something, then just avoid it because where will it go. some ppl will look at that as being afraid of trying something different or new, which is kinda sad.

cottage cheese, yuck. cottage cheese with stevia and cinammon, very tasty

oats, plain. oats with wheat germ, yes

chicken breast, boring. chicken breast with cajun seasoning, hell yea

you should never narrow the list of good things in your life. they may need some spicing up, sure. i work with ppl instead of just saying "oh thats ok, if you dont like it just dont do it". :(

My apologies, perhaps I was misunderstood:

I certainly did not mean to imply that people should avoid trying new foods (particularly new healthy foods), however I do not feel that someone should force feed themselves food that they have tried and found to dislike greatly. I'm certainly not asking anyone to stop trying new foods, such a practice would be, as you say, quite sad. Try something, if you don't like it, try something else. There are so many possibilities of healthy foods to try and enjoy that you are bound to find a diet consisting of things that are good for you as well as appeal to your sense of taste (and remember, taste buds to change from time to time so foods you did not originally like should be revisited).

My point was only issued in the hopes that by not force feeding foods that one dislikes simply because they are healthy they will avoid one of the most common traps of finding the right diet which is giving up a few weeks into it because they miss the enjoyment and satisfaction of their meals. I wanted to stress very strongly that meals can be both healthy and enjoyable and it should be the goal of the indvidual to make both ends meet.

aha :)

thats one thing with message boards. you type something and someone takes it a different way than what was implied.

cool ;)

I was never able to eat oatmeal my whole life, I experimented enough and found out that if I mix it with breakfast cerial and eat it like breakfast cerial that it tastes fine- So yeah, keep trying to like the foods you hate, just do not choke them down while you hate them

brussel sprouts are obviously a lost cause

Sodium is bad? I have this Low GI whole wheat bread and noticed it has 423mg (lol, typed 'mb' first) sodium per serving (2 slices). I use it to make a sandwich for lunch. Should I just use normal whole wheat?
