how can I use swimming to make muscles bigger

It will make your muscles bigger to an extent, assuming you are a beginner to bodybuilding. Sprint sets would be more beneficial than distance although for there to be any effect you would need some base distance. Long distances at a medium pace would, in the long run, result in a less bulkier physique.

If you've been bodybuilding for a while the muscle breakdown in sprint swimming isn't going to be sufficient to give you any more mass than you already have.

That is true. Distance swimming would decrease your size but increase your tone. To get bigger think in terms of resistance. Use a parachute when you swim and keep the 'reps' low. Swim one length and rest for a while to get the heart rate down. Then go again. Also, you can swim only using your arms by pressing your ankles together and using the keyhole stroke. This helped us to build up our shoulders and chest to an extent.

Good advice from Johnny about using a parachuteto increase the water resistance. You can also buytraining trunks/shorts which increase drag - I think Kiefer make some. Hand paddles too will increase your pulling power. Some swim squads train with buckets tied to them, again for increased resistance - competent swimmers only!
