How can I raise my metabolism?

I have a fairly average metabolism I think, is there anyway to increase it?
I know excersice and the right diet but i mean specifics

specific foods help out. One I try to drink everyday is Green Tea, but it has to be the true green tea and not the stuff with all the sugar. Also, spicy foods, peppers and stuff raise it. Also studies have shown that simply ice cold water helps. Eating more, smaller meals through out the day keep the metabolism up. So, instead of eating 3 good size meals, eat 5 or 6 smalls ones. I try and eat the 3 normal ones and then snacks in between those meals. But like you stated, exercise is really the main thing.

Resistance training, short burst intense metabolic conditioning and Paleo style eating. In my experience it's always been the best way to affect my own and anyone elses metabolic rate.

What kind of specifics are you looking for?

Matt

Factors affecting metabolic rate:

- Lean body mass
- Exercise/planned activity
- Incidental activity
- Recovery needs
- Thermogenic affect of eating
- Thermogenic affect of environment
- Hormones

I'm not going to recommend that you start messing around with your hormone status. The thermogenic affect of eating is directly correlated to how much you put in your mouth. Eat more and TAE goes up, eat less and it goes down. Environment isn't something you have a great deal of control over, but naturally if you're in a cold environment, you're body will have to generate more heat (which means using up more calories) to prevent hypothermia. This may result in increased or decreased activity levels, so the benefits could be cancelled out or amplified. Not really a reliable means.

This really means that the most significant things you can do to control your metabolic needs are to increase activity and increase muscle mass, which brings us right back to the basics: eat some protein, left weights, eat some more protein, sleep, repeat.

Isn't that just a myth about Green Tea?

Not that I know of. I've seen research and it has been labeled in many different places to be a good way to raise metabolism. It has a lot of antioxidants that boost the metabolic rate. Another snack would be walnuts. Contain similar things.

Just leading a healthy lifestyle. I think the best way is to increase muscle size and the amount of activity in your life. There are specific foods you can eat like chillis and peppers and even some herbs and spices. I think building muscle is always the best way.

Most of the research has only pointed to a casual relationship between green tea and raised metabolic rate. It's not the 'superfood' that the green tea industry would have you believe. Tastes nice though.

Unfortunately it still boils down to intense exercise and a good diet.

Lots of water, water speeds up metabolism. Make sure you train your whole body not just upper part etc. The more muscle the faster your metabolism.

The real question is why do you need to raise your metabolism.

I assume you want to lose fat. Then your goal would be to achieve a caloric deficit. Obviously a higher Basel metabolic rate makes it easier to achieve a deficit but its not necessary. Focus on exercising, eating at a deficit and not overtraining (i.e training everyday for 2 hours) and fat loss will come after that.

As mentioned in the thread a lot of stuff will increase your BMR, but they are pretty negligible. Green tea is associated with fat loss but its effects are in the low single point percentages. Caffeine and all stimulants have similar effects - in varying degrees.

hi guys,,,
Metabolism is basically the set of chemical reactions. It happens in living organisms and it is considered necessary to maintain life.Metabolism is a functions of genetics but you can increase it by building muscles. The human body gets energy from food through metabolism.

Hey...
Green tea extract comes from the leaves of the tea plant, Cammelia sinsenis. So I believe it is the best option for you... Green tea is an excellent way to boost your metabolism

Not really. Studies show that if you dink four or five cups of green tea daily, you MAY burn an extra 60 calories. So the effect is negligible at best.

Here is what WebMD (How to Increase Your Metabolism and Start Losing Fat) says about increasing metabolism:

The straight-up truth. As for other much-hyped metabolism boosters like green tea, caffeine, and hot peppers, it seems you’re better off focusing your weight loss efforts elsewhere. A compound in green tea called ECGC has been shown to elevate metabolism by a small amount, Clark tells WebMD, but it’s not enough to make a difference in weight. Capsaicin, the chemical in hot peppers that gives them their heat, boosts metabolism, too, but again, it’s not a significant enough change to have a weight loss benefit. Caffeine may or may not aid in weight loss -- as a central nervous system stimulant, it absolutely does increase metabolism, she says, but studies on its weight effects have had mixed results.

Water may increase metabolism, if you are willing to drink a lot of it (1.5l/day) for minimal gains (about 50 kCal/day).

Adding muscle (1 pound of muscle = 50 kCal/day) and integrating weight training and HIIT make the most sense.

People that are always looking for a short cut amaze me. Don't eat processed garbage and get your rear end to the gym. There, problem solved. Now stop blaming your metabolism.

ALOHA & HOWzit!

So far you have been getting good advice and recommendation in regards to increase metabolisim.
Food intake, fluid inducement, supplement stuff but for me its this.
(What I am going to share with you is not "absolute" but it seem to help those who need it.)

BREATHING is one of the most natural and most healthiest way to increase metabolisim.
Air/Oxygen is needed for cell activity.
When we understand "breathing" and use it right, the next healthy thing is that breathing creates saliva-moisture and that goes back into the body.
Water is needed for molecue activity.
This is like when you boil water, then turns into steam, you simply pour in more water to keep the "boiling action" - Energy.
I am not going to get into the whole thing about chemical/element breakdown.

The other thing is Posture is important.
Posture is liken to energy pathways.

Okay, so that's my take on the topic.
ALoha for now!

Why has noone mentioned the one this that has been ingrained in my psyche for 20 years.

NEVER SKIP BREAKFAST.

What is understand is this. If the body does not get food soon after waking, metabolism slows down for the day. Metabolism's is akeen to survival.

Zigzagging calories is by far one of the most effective methods for keeping your metabolism revved.the another is to Drink Cold Water regularly around1to 2 liter in a day.

SXI pro - yes i agree - funny how some are willing to do all sorts of crazy things for a quick fix, but will be on the quick fix bandwagon forever, as they're not willing to make the simple but permanent changes!
