Hello all! I'm new here and hope to make some new online friends. I'm willing to support you and am seeking support as well. Mutual encouragement is useful and fulfilling on both sides.
I've lost over 100 lbs using an online Bible study (to get my head on straight) and fitness hula-hooping as exercise. I'd like to lose about 30 more lbs. I am 56-years old. My special challenges include diabetes, hypertension, and lingering problems from a long-ago accident (rotater cuff injury, metal in an ankle, etc.). Here's my before and after photo:
I'm only 5'3" (on a really tall day), and though I'm fitting better into my clothing, I know I need to get rid of those last pounds. Every pound I lose helps with the diabetes, too.
I counted it as a special blessing when recently, I was accepted as a finalist in a 90-day competition sponsored by a restaurant chain. I don't have health insurance, so I was thrilled that part of the contest includes physical monitoring and 4 wellness physicals. However, I find that I'm competing against much younger people (with their wrinklefree skin and darn youthful metabolism) ::grin:: hence the need for special support over the course of the next 9 weeks (we are three weeks into the contest).
I want to be sure that I do not violate the rules of this forum. My understanding is that i may list a link one time regarding this personal challenge i'm involved with. I'd like to supply a link to a video of me using my fitness hula hoop which I made in connection with the contest. I made this particular video in response to the jock attitude that hula hooping is not really exercise (more about that later). Here's the video (click) I think it tells a lot about me personally and also shows what fitness hooping and hoopdance are all about.
Recently the American Council on Exercise (ACE) issued a report on a study of the efficacy of fitness hula hooping as exercise. I was not suprised to read that hooping is as useful as bootcamp! Woot! I knew that already as I've been using the hoop for 2 years. I like to ride my bike and walk, but somehow those sometimes seem like chores. But often I'll decide to "play" with my hoop and 45 minutes later, I'm sweating and thrilled to have completed another workout.
Well, I don't want your eyes to be crossed after reading my first loooong post! I'll be checking in here regularly and eager anticipate meeting some of you and sharing our journey toward better health.
