high protein diet

I'm on that high protein diet and atleast once a week since I started this diet I get bloated and my stomach hurts alot. Could it be the diet? I drink plenty of water but I don't think this bloating is normal, it's painful I have to lay in bed for 2 or more hours. What other diet is there besides the high protein diet that is clean?

A normal, balanced diet will work really well for you. Normal/Balanced doesn't mean the average American diet, of course, which is anything but.

How "high protein" is your diet? High protein doesn't necessarily have to mean a whole mess of protein -- for a good, healthy diet, you'll want about 50% - 70% of your meals to be proteins -- your entire meal, however, shouldn't be very large (somewhere between 1 and 2 adult fists in size - ranging more towards the high end if you're eating infrequently).
 
I have this too when I down my protein shake. I've heard this from other people; since protein is hard to digest it might take your system a little to get used to the increased protein

The first few weeks after I began significantly increasing my protein intake, I was crampy and bloated a lot. Be sure to also eat a lot of fibre - and keep drinking that water. Your body will get used to it with time.

As Fil suggested, perhaps you can share more details on your diet and we can better help you? And your last question - a clean diet doesn't have to be high-protein. Clean just means no processed foods, no white flour or sugar or preservatives, etc.
 
To much protein is a bad idea. Your body can only process so much protein in a day and any access can cause damage!!

Your body can process roughly 30g of protein in a 2 hour span. This of course varies from person to person, but if you need a rule-of-thumb, that's it. Any excess will become waste.

They also recommend you only get up to 1g of protein per lbs of lean bodyweight per day.

When people start consuming too much protein (over 2.0 g/kg/d), the extra protein can become a stressful stimulus for the kidney. This is even more of a concern as we get older and our organs are less efficient and effective.

Very high levels of dietary protein have also been correlated with increased urinary calcium excretion. The loss of calcium through urine could potentially be harmful for bone turnover, with the added risk of osteoporosis. Finally, protein requires vitamin B6 in order to be metabolized and ultimately utilized in the body. Very high levels of dietary protein increase the requirement for this B vitamin.
