Hi!

Just wanted to introduce myself.
Male, 37, from the Netherlands.

Been steadily gaining weight since I went to college.
Three years (feb 2010) ago I said enough is enough, I was weighing 273 at the time.

Through training and being much more conscious of the food I ate I managed to lose 65 pounds by november 2010.
Since then I'm trying to keep my weight somewhat constant (ranging from 205 to 225 (damn holidays :p ) ).

Currently I weigh 215, and I've been working hard since last december to focus more on getting my body into shape and less focussing on weight alone.
Results are encouraging, but nowhere near where I want to be yet :)

Why am I here now, and not before when I started you might ask...
Well I guess when I started I was easy to stay motivated and keep going. Firstly the scales provided motivation in bunches (both in the fact that i was weighing that much to begin with and the losses it showed were a great felling that kept me going easily). Also ppl started noticing that I was losing weight, which landed me a lot of positive reactions.

Now, the scales results aren't coming that easily and I feel the need lately to talk about it to others who are losing weight and getting into shape, to help others and to encourage eachother.

so here I am :)

Congratulations on the progress you've already made! I find the scales provide motivation as well--It's like a confirmation of all your hard work :) Although the scales are not always our friends!!

Welcome to the forum--I'd suggest making a diary on the diary section of the forum, great place to meet others and get feedback, support and to encourage others.

Welcome to the forum.

Firstly - you have done very well to lose the weight that you have lost and maintain it so well. We all go up a bit at holidays... I certainly do too...

A big bit of advice that I would give you - especially if you are exercising - is that you should be taking measurements as well as getting onto the scales... Sometimes we see absolutely no movement in the scales - but the tape measure tells a different story... The fact is that if we exercise we can build muscle... Muscle is heavier than fat so it is perfectly possible to weigh the same and actually have a smaller body due to there being more muscle. It can be strongly argued that a move on the tape measure is better than a move on the scales because it better reflects what people see when they look at us... How overweight they perceive that we are...

If you are not exercising - then that would certainly be a good idea. Muscle helps you to burn more calories which has to be good. It also makes us look more toned. It may be that you would meet people when you exercise - and the social aspect can help to keep you on track. Exercise also causes endorphins to be released which would make you feel positive and could help you to stay on track too.

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I know what you mean Omega, about the muscle tissue.
I have been seeing improvement in that area, much more so than on the scales.
Even though I haven't gotten exact measurements, I do enjoy what I call "non scale victories".

Nothing better than being able to buy a pair of jeans in a smaller size than the ones you were wearing when you walked into the store :)

Absolutely - those non scale victories are the best...

I feel like my weight has not been moving much recently... I've hardly seen a pound drop over the past month... I have however been exercising like a demon... I have to say that I was thrilled that not one but two different people (that see me regularly) said to me tonight that I am looking a lot thinner now...
