Hi I am Rachel and I am a freshman in college. When I left for college in August I weight 190 was overweight but it only got worse when I went away. I now weigh about 210. I obviously am stuck eating dorm food and on a college students budget dont have many options to purchase other food. One of my biggest challenges has been the decrease in exercise level. In highschool I was a two sport varsity athlete all four year. I played varsity volleyball and basketball and was constantly being pushed spending upwards of 4-5 hours a day at the gym practicing, conditioning and lifting. Not only do I find myself not having that sort of time I find myself not have the same drive. when I had sports it was like I was working for a purpose and it made me push myself even harder. I would love to get down to around 150 I am 5'9" and I think that would be a good weight to start with! I need help..any ideas are welcomed and appriciated!

hi rachel i know it can be frustrating when you want to lose weight for all the right reasons but just can't get motivated or have enought time.could you join a sprorts group? i was always the same to start with but then it ment alot to me to get down to a healthy weight so i just stuck at it and everytime i need a motivation drive i just thought what i could look like if i managed to lose all my weight and what i would look like if i gave up and carried eating and i knew wich one was the best.if you really want to lose weight just go for it every exrcise help but cradio exercises such as jogging, swimming.cycling are the best for weight loss.i think after you have been doing cardio for example running for around 15-20mins you start burning fat as your body has to then turn to it's fat store to get energy.when you first start if you are'nt very fit and want to take up running start with short jogs and walk to get your breathe back then jog.it taken along ime but if you stick to if for a while you will start to see redults.the other thing you should do is measure yourself around your waste and hip and anywere elso you might want, beacause somtime the weight isn't all fat it is muscle. hope the helps. x becky

Hi and welcome! I've heard that college food leans towards being fatty and sugary. If you can avoid sugar altogether (I keep saying this, I feel like a broken record!) you could drop thousands of calories a week without even trying.

Doing that was one of the first, and I feel most important steps for me.

Thanks for the advice. Obviously as a college student my food selection in the cafeteria is very limited. Pizza, Burgers, Fries, I try my best and avoid these things. There is also the salad bar but that basically consists of lettuce and cheese, crutons and dressing. Not really the healthiest but I try to stick with that as much as possible.. fresh fruit is at a minimum if even existant. Any suggestions?!?!?

I can relate

Hey Rachel,
Yeah...the freshman experience can be a jarring one; where are you going to school? A lot of dorms seem to be catering more to those seeking healthy foods, so I would have hoped you would have more access to fresh vegetables (my dorm has a full salad and sandwich bar, which is really nice) and such...but even if you don't maybe you can try to eat soups or skip the white bun when it comes to burgers; wheat bread has more nutrients and is more filling--which means you'll eat less later. Also, I know that it's hard to find time in the gym--I'm definitely slacking in that department this semester, but if you have a reading assignment to do, it's really nice to kill two birds with one stone: hop on your favorite cardio machine at the gym (elliptical, bike, treadmill, etc.) and workout for twenty minutes or more and read for a class at the same time!

Hope this helps!

I'm stuck in the same situation...I'm a freshman too and since I've been away from home I've struggled to eat well and stay active, but once I realized that I was gaining weight I evalutated my lifestyle and changed just a few things. That sucks that your cafeteria doesn't have a very good salad bar...that's what I live on here lol. I would suggest (like Tomble said) avoiding sugar as much as possible and also just working out whenever you can find time. I usually go twice a day because I can never find time longer than 20-30 minutes to go work out, so I do it in two sessions. It keeps me energized and feeling good. Anyway, I hope I helped and good luck with your goals =]

Frustrated

So I have been working really hard and I feel as though I am moving no where. I have been home on winter break nearly a month now and have managed to loose a measly 2 lbs. I have not been eating sugars at all and have been eating extremely low portioned meals around 3 or 4 times a day. I have been putting in 30-60 mins of cardio per day, along with a 20 min ab routine and then weight lifting. While I am becoming more toned I still want to drop the weight. Im getting extremely frustrated! I am open to any and all suggestions!!
