Hello, I'm new here.

I am a habitual over-eater (I mean, seriously!!!) who has just recently started trying to lose weight after I realized that consume over 8,000 calories a day (found that out with my new "food journal"). I have also recently chosen to become vegetarian.

I have a permanent appatite...

What the heck do you do to get rid of that constantly hungry feeling???

First off welcome to the forum and congrats for starting your journey.

You might consider getting a ticker (the little animations at the bottom of peoples post that show your goal weight or bmi) or maybe starting a journal.

Now, I have been considered a person that can eat ALOT! but, 8,000calories? Wow lol... I would love to see a fitday.com log of what an 8,000calorie day would look for you. ;)

Anyway, if you have constant hunger that simply can not be satisfied there are a range of medical disorders that could explain this. It may be worth your time to mention (if you hadn't already) to your doctor that your hunger is everlasting and unstopping. A few test will help to assess rather its a mental or physical problem.

So, have you decided your "plan of attack"? What is your strategy for weight loss. You have already made a great step in taking a lifestyle change rather than a gimicy diet. But, remember calories are always the boss. You can still retain your current weight on a vegan lifestyle if you do not adjust your calorie intake.

Hi Sylvan

I too can sometimes experience hunger constantly. I am new and started a journal so that maybe I can pinpoint what triggers are etc. I am just "freestyling" it on the diary until I truly begin my eating overhaul. I am going to make some low cal soups to try to combat those times when i am feeling very very hungry

I have heard that eating alot of carbs can make you feel unsatisfied hungry...I wonder if its "decarb withdrawals" that we feel during those first few weeks.

Good luck to you

Kare

8,000 calories? Try two or three full-size bags of chips, a bunch of ham, pork tenderloin... Let's see? What else did I eat the other day? Ummm... Three different kinds of pie (two slices each), an order of nachos and cheese w/ extra cheese, more ham, more pork tenderloin, most of a rotisserie chicken, trifle (I made it myself!), and a butt-load of candy!

I'm adjusting my calorie intake along with the vegetarian thing. This morning, instead of a three-egg omelet with ham and 3 cheeses, followed by whatever else I find in the fridge, I ate 1 egg and 1 veggie bratwurst (tasty!), a total of 215 calories!

I've noticed that while my hunger is not entirely satiated by vegetables, it definitely takes a lot more of the edge off than meat does! I've heard that it's because veggies digest slower (so they stay in your stomach longer, and fill you up more/longer!)

I guess you could say my attack plan is to excercise at least 3 times a week (30-minute sessions) and to reduce my calorie intake to ensure that I rarely get more than 1800 a day (the amount that I burn by doing nothing all day!)

Never heard the thing about the carbs! I need to figure out my triggers... That's actually what I'm supposed to be doing to lower my constant hunger...

Protein is known to curb hunger and appetite while many types of carbs are known to increase and fuel your appetite. I personally think it would be a mistake to cut out your meat. You could try eating a portion of meat and veggies while cutting back on simple sugar and flour carbs, which may be fueling your appetite. Its worth a try for a day or two to see if it cuts your appetite yet still leaves you satisfied.

My view is that you would do better if you dont go to such extremes. If you're used to a 1000 calorie breakfast then go down to a 500-600 one rather than to 200 calories. You can have 2 slices of toast with butter, 2 eggs, and a few slices of bacon and still be fine.

hi sylvan

i went to grocery store tonight and stocked up on protien drinks for breakfast and then made a big pot of soup out of just veggies...(using veggie boullian)...I am going to use that when I get really hungry. I made the broth out of stewed tomatoes and the veggie boullian...damn how do u spell boullian..boylan, boilllyan....boioullaian....oh well you know what i mean.

I dont know if crystal light counts as water..but i think it does

we gotta ask an expert

yes cyrstel light DOES count as water...and is one the best things to drink to get your water intake in!!!!!!

well that sounds like you have a plan...good luck with that!!

Ladies, Crystal Light is made out of a bunch of chemicals which many believe are toxic to the body. Aside from hydrating your tissues, I would think water is supposed to flush out your system, so guzzling glasses upon glasses of Crystal Light or other diet drinks seems like its defeating the purpose. How about mixing 1 part juice of any kind (grape, cranberry) with 3 parts seltzer water? It tastes like a soda but its all natural with just a bit of sugar and calories, rather a bunch of fake nasty chemicals.

Hey Sylvan. Thanks for joining the forums and congrats on starting a food journal. From reading what you eat, you are eating "easy" calories (the kind that go down easy and have little nutritional value). High fiber stuff will help slow your eating down, eating meat or protein with each meal should help (no fried stuff allowed & stay away from red meat). Get a 2-pound + bag of baby carrots to munch on... Look for high fiber low calorie bread (might say 35 or 40 on the side or something about "net carbs"). Try adding an activity or hobby that you don't associate with food (TV watching tends to lead toward more food eating).

If it was "normal" for you to eat 8000 calories in a day, don't suddenly go down to 2000 calories. Your body will freak out and it will become very hard for you to mentally do it. Be more gradual in your approach, you should probably do 10 calories per pound as a minimum for starters and see how you feel after a month.

As far as feeling constantly hungry, I try to keep myself busy as I eat out of boredom. Does your stomach constantly have physical hunger pangs? Also, drink your weight in pounds / 2 in ounces of straight water a day. If you don't drink regular water at all right now, then start with pounds/4 in ounces of straight water and then work up from there. I tend to EAT when I'm THIRSTY (dunno if you're like this) because I mis-interpret the thirsty signal as being hungry.
