Hi, I'm new here...duh

In keeping with the context article posted above I will give some context.

I was very mentally ill for many years and have recently recovered. I am so happy to be alive and well. I do not wish to lose the weight because I am unhealthy (at least comparatively) and I don't want to lose it because I think it makes me ugly (I feel beautiful inside and out). I want to lose weight because I think I need to break my obsession with food.

I am 42, female, with 2 teens, and I am 240ish pounds. I guess that makes me super obese or something on that BMI scale. Not enough to qualify for a WLS but enough to stop me from getting on roller coasters :)cry:

I am not sure that the surgery would be right for me anyway. I have multiple food allergies and digestive issues. Adding stress to my already delicate innards would probably suck.

I have no idea where to start. I have done Weight Watchers in the past but this time I am looking for a change that will not make me a miserable skinny person. I have lost weight 3 or 4 times with them and am a lifetime member if I wanted to go back but I want to see if I can find something that doesn't have me dreaming about food every night. And planning 6 meals in advance. I want to lose my food obsession not increase it.

So, I think I am looking for something that requires little tracking. Also I have a list of food intolerances that I need to work with: gluten, dairy (I can have goat cheese and rice milk), soy (soy is in every processed food known to man so I can't generally have processed food), and yeast. So prepackaged or predetermined menus are probably no good for me.

Any ideas of a good diet to follow?

Will lack of carbs cause me to be ravenous??

You know what I hate about "a lifestyle change" aka restricting calories aka diet??? I am out of my mind hungry. And it is my family that pays. Hubby reminded me that every time I go on a diet for the whole length of the diet (my personal max is like 2 years) I am umm difficult to live with (read b****). I am only on day 2 and already I have chewed out my son and hubby for nothing.

I don't know if I am eating the wrong foods or not enough or what but I gotta get over this.

If anyone can lend a hand I would appreciate it. Here is what I ate yesterday and today:

Yesterday:

Breakfast
2-egg omelette with salsa and feta cheese and 1 tbsp olive oil

Lunch
Cranberry-Feta-Cashew Salad with 3 oz of chicken
1 peach
1 plum

Dinner
Cranberry-Feta Cashew Salad with 4 oz of chicken
1 pear

Today
2-egg omelette with salsa and feta and 1 tsp olive oil

Lunch
1 peach
1 plum
chicken leg no skin
coffee with 2 tbsp coffee mate

...

I just realized as I entered this data in that I have had very little in the complex carbs department. Would that make me crazy hungry? My calories are close to the mark, would the lack of complex carbs make that big of a difference?

If lack of complex carbs is indeed making me consider eating the furniture, will it go away or will I feel like this until I give in?

Hi Connie!

Personally I find that your current diet seems very restrictive, and I wonder if this is having an effect on your mood? I find that what works for me is not reinventing my daily eating routine from a to z, but rather, to modify it little by little. For me, it's been about replacing fries with salad, or skipping mayo, or having no dessert, or no white bread with butter, etc. If I try to make everything perfect, I go nuts! I guess it's like trying to quit smoking or something... lots of people need to reduce them, then use patches... hard turkey can be difficult! Of course we need food to live, which makes it difficult, but you get what I mean.

Plus if you already feel beautiful inside and out, and you are losing weight for longer-term, health reasons, I really don't see the need for superdiets :)

Hope it helps, good luck!!

Have you tried the Paul McKenna 'Ican make you thin' CD? It is making me change my attitude towards food which is a massive help on my road to a healthy body. I too am in the 240's zone. I eat between 1800 and 2000 calories a day and have been doing light exercise. I lost 13 lbs in 3 weeks. Drink lots of water is the best advice I have been given on here!

Also your diet is very high in cholesterol, not good for your heart and may make you feel sluggish! Good luck.

You know it never occurred to me to diet any other way. Step one of the diet is always get rid of everything in the house that isn't great for you. I guess that is why I am here. I know quite a bit about food but I don't know how to do this so that no-one gets hurt.

I looked back and the diet you see may be a result of my intolerances. I cannot eat a lot of what you would consider normal. I cannot eat bread or milk or commercially prepared salad dressings, or any commercially prepared anything (with some small exceptions). The things that are different for me are: more greens (I usually just eat the meat with a small side of veggies and a side of rice), way less brown rice, no rice cracker and dip snack, no tablespoons of peanut butter on my way through the kitchen. Everything else is pretty much the same. I think I will add my brown rice back in and see how that is.

Just like everyone else, my imagined food intake has little relation to my actual food intake. So although I cannot eat cake or burgers or pizza with my intolerances, I make a mean hidden ranch dip that I use for my rice crackers.

I checked out Paul McKenna. I have been told that I am one of those people that is less available to hypnotherapy. Does he say anything about people who thought they could not be hypnotized or open to suggestions. I did a Marshall Sylver (I think that was his name) program and I didn't get anywhere...and I was on major psychiatric meds at the time.

Also your diet is very high in cholesterol, not good for your heart and may make you feel sluggish! Good luck.

Not sluggish so far but plenty angry and difficult to live with. I don't think I have cholesterol problems, my doctor says that despite my weight I have a good bp and cholesterol. But it bears keeping in mind...what about my diet is high in cholesterol?

Thank you all so much for your help.
