Hi all,

My name is Stuart and im 25, from UK!

Back 2 to 3 year ago i smoked heavily, drank like a fish and only exersize i got was walking to pub.

I have now cut my drinking from almost 6 to 8 pints almost every night to a bottle of wine as a treat every 2 to 3 weeks; and i stopped smoking almost 11 months ago with only one relaps of a single cig 8 weeks past (i was almost sick, never again!).

This is part of my 3 part plan to get my health in a good place! part one and two as above.

But now its time to shift my gut :)

Im 181cm and 109kg (was weighed about 2 months ago, no idea now).

My diet hasnt changed properly yet, apart from having smaller portions.

I got myself a second-hand excersize bike of a fiver, and im on that 5 or 6 days a week for 20 to 40 mins. I also dusted my weights off i had from when i was 17 and using them 2 to 3 times a week...

Iv only been at this for 3 weeks so far, and already i feel good about myself, no real fitness as yet but stopping smoking and drinking gave me a missive boost, and 3 weeks anit that long really.

I replaced my smoking habit with sugar, mainly in my coffee, but starting to cut back on that now.

Reason iv joined this forum is because im doing this by myself, no other party to compete against or drive me, so i thought this would be a great place to gain ideas and insperation as well as share my progress and experiences with other in a simular boat... :D

Hi all

Wow congrats on giving up the vices, I tell you if you can give up smoking and drinking heavily then weight loss should be a piece of cake.

haha no pun intended, no? the drinking thing was supprisingly easy, basically i got bored of it, waking up with hangovers feel, pretty really crappy all day everyday in general. so i cut to strickly weekend and now im not bothered if i go 3 months without a drink, its usually if iv had a stressful week at work if im in need of one on a weekend.

smoking is a different kettle of fish, wasnt easy but i did do it 'cold turkey', through willpower (and sugar lol) alone i over came it. I wanted to stop for cost and health reasons, so i just did, on my dinner on 16th of August last year i have my 2 cigs and gave the rest of my packet to a work friend and said i dont need them any more you have them... for the next 3 weeks i was moody, didnt sleep too well and ate everything to find something to replace the 'precious' nicotine; hence sugar lol. i didnt put on any weight really, nothing noticable anyway, i very rarely weigh myself so i couldnt really tell that way. but yes im now 11 months smoke free (barring the incedent) and well off for it too; not only noticably fitter (running and walking for longer without getting breatheless), but also in my pocket: Even though i bought my cigs from a 'cig man' and got really them cheap i still spent 20 to 30 quid a week, that now goes into my new hobby, fishkeeping, and i love it! Alot better than smoking i tell ya :)

Congrats on what you have done already, and good luck with your weight loss. Oh, and there's a whole thread somewhere in the off topic section about fishkeeping....you might wanna check it out. :) Welcome to the forum!

Wow! I used to drink a lot too, now I barely ever do. I hate the feeling of waking up groggy and wanting chili cheese fries (and always getting them.. and then feeling bad about it and sleeping away the afternoon). I don't really know if cutting out alcohol had any bearing on my weight, but I know that I feel a lot better without it, so that's enough for me! I haven't been a smoker but I've heard the desire for a cigarette is similar to the craving for cookies that strikes many of us at night, so props to you! Plus all of the additional anger and stuff from coming off the nicotine. That is great. Good luck with your exercise!

Yeah drinking isn't too bad as long as you're not a full blown alcoholic, I drink a lot less now I'm on a diet, beer and cider are loads of calories and if you go out on the town and get completely wasted that might be something like 250 calories x8 pints and that's like 2000 calories, plus whatever takeaway you end up having which is probably another 1500, plus whatever you eat during the day...wow you end up having about 2-3 days worth of calories in about 6-7 hour period, it's crazy. I've dialled way back on doing that.
