Hi Everyone,

Hi,

I'm brand new on this forum, from sunny South Africa.

Happy New Year! everyone. One of my new years resolutions is to lose that last, very stubborn 5 kg's. I have tried so many diets, but I have actually started losing weight when I started "eating". Can you believe it, we all think that we should be doing the complete opposite, but if I don't eat I don't lose weight.

I have two beautiful kids, but I am still trying to lose the baby fat. Please chat to me. I can do with advice. I will also let you guys know what I am trying. I have ordered a low gi diet book, will let you know whether it is good.

Bye for now.

Weight watchers has a new series of commercials out in the US - with the tagline that Diets don't Work... while I'm not a fan of WW - I am a fan of their slogan - Diets dont work and you seem to be realizing that...

In order to lose weight you do need to eat... jsut make sure that y ou are using more calories than you take in - and you also use calories by breathing, sleeping, etc...

Welcome to the site and enjoy yor stay

The problem with relying on the glycemic index is multi-fold:

1. Calories rule all. You can eat all low GI foods yet still be in an energetic surplus, thus gaining weight.

2. GI values are determined in an overnight-fasted state using isolated foods. That's far from real world.

3. When people think of the GI, they think of the insulin response to specific foods. But the GI doesn't paint an accurate picture in many cases with regards to the insulin response. Take milk for example. It has a low GI. But it has a high insulin response, which is contradictory to those who don't really know what's going on.

I could go on..... but I'm just not a fan of relying solely on the GI approach. If it's working for you though, that's what really counts. Don't let me sway you from using it. I just wanted to 'spit' some information about it to the forum in general.

Wow! Steve, are you a doctor? You seem to really know your stuff! I'm impressed!

BTW Welcome to the forum Mauchat!

No, no doctor unfortunately. If I could do it again, maybe. Just know a good bit about the sciences of the body.

Hello from SA

Thanx for the replies to my first post yesterday. Steve, i appreciate your infor on low gi. Never came across the cons, but I still think it is better to follow a diet where you are allowed to eat.

Carpedebass, thanx for the welcome.

Just a general question, how often should you weigh yourself without the risk of being absolutely de-motivated after reading the results.

Ciaou for now!!

Haha, I definitely was NOT contesting the idea the diets that allow you to eat aren't good.

I don't think anyone here promotes a diet that doesn't allow you to eat.

That's going to be very individual depending on the person. Read this post I made a week or so ago with regards to my opinion:

Hello,
I'm back, after a very busy weekend. I was very good this weekend sticking to my meal plans and not snacking on unhealthy food. I think it's an excellent achievement because Saturday night i dreamt about eating a rich chocolate cake with fresh cream. I had to be very strong the next morning just to keep me away from the bakery and getting that cake. I read somewhere that if you have a craving for something sweet, you should smell on some vanilla, it will send a message to the brain that your sweet craving has been satisfied. Anybody else have any suggestions as I am absolutely addicted to caramel and chocolate.
I hav to go, hav to decide what I'm cooking for supper

Bye

buy it for yourself in very small quanties and enjoy it -just make it fit into your calorie range foro the day... If you deprive yourself of it completely, that could lead to binges of it later on but if you allow yourself a bit of it daily -you know that you can have more the next day so it's not big deal anymore... Enjoy all things inmoderation...
