I discovered this site by chance through Google and I've been totally inspired. I've spent the last hour and half looking at before and after pics and its really motivated me.

A little bit about me:
I'm a 23 year old banker, who has decided to take my health a lot more seriously. Since leaving university and starting work, I have noticed my weight creep up, little by little but I guess I just ignored it until recently.

I went to see my doctor about something and got weighed, I couldn't believe it! I thought I was around 14 stone, I'm actually 16 (277lbS)! My BMI is ridicously high and the majority of the clothes in my wardrobe don't fit anymore. I've always used the excuse of being tall (I'm 5"10), but now I'm not happy with my weight or how I look. I go on holiday next month and that has been my motivation some what, as well as a trip I have in September to NYC.

I'm not sure where to start as I keep getting conflicting information. Food wise I've started to cut out sugar, fried stuff and eat more fruit and drink water, but if I'm honest I don't really know what I should be eating and how often.

I also got myself a personal trainer last week, who is a friend's cousin and while I've enjoyed the three sessions last week, after reading some of threads on this site about personal trainers, I'm in two minds as to whether to continue with him. Personally I'm very motivated about this and if I knew what it is I should be doing in the gym (or outside of it), it would help a lot. I've had gym membership since sept 06, and have been about 10 times, so I would definitely like to get my monies' worth in the next 3 months!

What do you guys advice or can you direct me to any useful threads?

Hello and welcome!

Hello Valencia,

Welcome to the WLF. I'm sure it'll be of as much help to you as it's been to me.. I think it's great you've decided to get healthy and lose the excess weight - it takes motivation and willpower, which you will continue to need as you go along.

In terms of a starting point, you might want to take a look at this post. I've not posted my program on there myself cos I've not yet got round to it, but you might want to go through it first of all to get an idea of the different techniques people use. Hopefully from all this you'll develop a broad outline of your strategy (whether exercise or food or combination of both) which you can finely tune as you go along.

You might not want to make any sudden decisions to do with exercise as you're still figuring everything all out. I think it's great you have a gym membership - I attend one too and it's been really helpful in helping me reach my goals.. Why don't you speak to a few personal trainers and get their suggestions.

It's a life changing decision so I wish you loads of luck. You'll have loads of support on this site. I suggest you create a diary of your own so you can track your progress, motivation, etc.

Welcome again and best of luck! :)

You need to make sure you don't make yourself feel as though you can't be bothered or that it is annoying having to exercise, because that means you are either pushing too hard or doing exercise you don't enjoy.

take it easy - if you enjoy some exercises, do them more often [I enjoy walking the most, so i try to do lots of that everyday, and go jogging or cycling when I'm in the mood]. Stick to a good diet and you should be set to lose the weight.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Mike

Hello! Good for you, this site is very helpful and I am sure you will find everyone is very supportive. My weight loss is driven by the following :

1. low fat, no sugar
2. Walking! Lots and lots of walking.
3. No snacking
4. One meal a week of whatever I want, to satisfy cravings.

Good for you, taking an active approach to losing the weight :)

Tomble - I like the idea of having one meal a week of whatever you want. Seems like a good way to keep up motivation and so on. I used to have the occasional day off the diet once I had lost a good amount of weight, but setting aside one day a week gives you something to look forward too, and being planned is great.

Just out of interest when you say you don't eat sugar, does that mean you don't eat or drink anything without added sugar?

Mike.

Thanks everyone!

Went to the gym last week and was able to run ten mins straight on the treadmill by the end of the week. That may not sound a lot to most, but to me thats a big achievement. I can actually start to feel my fitness levels improving!

Well done - that's how it begins. Soon you'll find you can do 20 minutes, then 30 minutes, then before you know it you'll be doing pushing yourself even further.

Keep up the attitude and you'll slowly see the results :)

Good on you! Personal achievements are what matter the most, so don't worry if it "might not sound a lot." Keep up the good work! :)
