Hello, I'm also new. Some quick advice I can give:
Go to a site like MyFitnessPal and calculate how many calories you should be taking in each day. You enter in age, weight, height, etc. and it will produce the approximate amount of calories you should be at each day. If you have a smartphone, it's a good idea to also get the app so you can be adding your calories throughout the day, and everything counts, even that cup of coffee + milk or a granola bar you have in the middle of the afternoon.
Drink lots of water and cut out empty calories (like soda). Tea is good for you as well. But again, anything with calories, track it.
When you feel hungry, drink a glass of water, you may just be thirsty.
Don't eat big meals, but rather 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Breakfast is the most important, so that might take a bit more calories.
If you work a sedentary job like me (office job), then find little ways to add activity to your day. When you get up to use the restroom, go to another floor perhaps. Take the stairs rather than the elevator on the way to/from lunch. If you drive to work, park a little further away. It all seems little and may feel like a waste of time, but it's all burning some calories.
Speaking of exercise, don't burn yourself out right away. Work yourself up to a healthy exercise routine. For example, don't just start trying to jog 3 miles or something. Start out getting yourself up to that shape, and even when you hit it, mix it up a little bit. Your body can adjust to normal routines and react accordingly.
Hope this helped at all.
