hey everybody, i am a daily dieter and exerciser. i run 4 miles and lift every other day so i got the physical part down. i have a question about calorie counting and the nutritional facts label. say some is 250 calories per serving. it has 12g of fat, 22g of carbs, and 30g of protein. does that mean its only 250 calories? or is it 566? i get 566 because each gram of fat is 9 calories, and carbs and protein are both 4 calories per gram. If someone could clarify that would be great.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure where you get 566?

12g fat = 108 calories

22g carbs = 88 calories

30g protein = 120 calories

All of those added together only equals 316 calories... did you get these numbers off of an actual product?

i got 566 by adding the 318 calories to the 250 calories it says where it says calories. its not a real product i just made it up. as i said i dont know how to read the label and was wondering if the amount of protein and fat and carbs equals the amount of calories it says or do you add it to the amount of calories it says.

Oh ok I see...

So if a product states that a serving is 250 calories, that means that the calories from fat, carbs, and protein in that serving add up to 250 calories. Does this link work for you? http://www.diabetes.ca/documents/about-diabetes/ENG_RGB_FactSheet.pdf This will probably explain things well for you!

thank you so much for clarifying that! that means ive been overcounting and possibly starving my body. although the weight loss has started back up again hahaha

Well I'm glad that's more clear now! How many calories were you allowing yourself and how much were you overestimating?

i was allowing myself 1200 calories a day and overestimating at least 400. so only 800 calories a day. wow is that bad.
