Hey there. I need advice and critiquing.

I'm a brand new member, just signed up minutes ago, saw the sample "opening question" under the FAQ's, and wanted to start by using that model. So....my stats and situation are:

24 years old
Male
6'2
177 lbs
Bodyfat - At last check on my BF and Weight scale at home, I believe it said 19%. I'll re-check that tomorrow morning.

My situation/goals are somewhat cluttered, so I apologize if I'm asking for too much! Basically, I want to tone up/get defined, but also lose weight and start a whole new, revamped diet.

I'm the type of person who has been embarrassed to take his shirt off in the summer, and almost never does. I actually tried it last year at the shore, but was embarrassed to say the least. I've always been self conscious about my body, even though others(family and friends) tell me I look fine. I'm tired of procrastinating about getting into better shape and would like to make 2009 the year that I give my all to that goal.

I've worked out and exercised over the years, but still consider myself a novice. I have no idea how to eat probably(for getting into shape), with nutrition and diet being my biggest obstacle.

A current "day in the eating life of Jeff" would be something like this:

Breakfast: Usually skipped, but if eaten, it ranges from either (option 1) All Natural Oatmeal with Orange or Grape Juice and a half of english muffin or bagel (option 2) cereal or brown scrambled eggs and a bagel.

Lunch: Since my most recent job only allowed a few 15 min breaks, my packed lunchs were pretty bland, they consisted of a baggie filled with pretzels, a few cookies, a coke a cola, and a cheese sandwich

Dinner: It's usually either a TV Dinner, something italian, soup and grilled cheese, tuna and mac/cheese, cheeseburger, etc.

*As you can see, there's usually no in-between meal snacks, not much water drinking, rarely any fresh veggies or fruits, and I don't really take vitamins. *
Wow, as I type and read this, I realize just how bad and bland my diet is. No wonder why I've never been in shape! So with that all said, please help!!

You've already figured out the problem: your diet sucks. Its heavy on carbs, and processed foods.

Check out the stickies in the Nutrition forum a couple links down on the main page. For the most part, you never want to skip breakfast, and you want protein in every meal.

Prepping meals in advance, especially using cheap Gladware or Tupperware, and a cooler to store it in, helps eliminate reasons you 'cant eat'.

You'll need exercise (weights and cardio) and a good nights sleep to make all of this go smoothly.

It IS going to be a lifestyle change...not just a 6 week diet. Lifestyle got you to this point, and changing it is the only way to change your body for the long term.

welcome to the site. We'll do what we can to help you make educated decisions about 'what to do'.

I'm a big fan of Dr. John Berardi, Ph.D. too. He has a good nutrition cookbook out Gourmet Nutrition as well if you find it hard to be creative in the kitchen. (I know I do)

Yep bang on mal.

Jersy, here's your first step...

Do you really want this? I mean do you REALLY want this? Because if you do then you are going to have to change your whole life around. Think of pushing a stalled car... its hard but once it gets rolling and the engine comes to life... it's much easier.

So basically the beginning is gona be a bit tough specially if you are so used to eating TV dinners and the like.

So accept that. Because if you aren't going to commit for life... you are wasting your time. (to be frank)

Second... you said it yourself. Your goals are cluttered. Well then how the hell do you expect to reach them?

It's like me handing you a gun and saying "SHOOT". What are you going to shoot at? I didn't tell you what to aim for. Do you get my point?

You need to sit down for a good 20 mins and figure out what you want. Figure out what you want to LOOK LIKE.

Then you need to have what I call "the fitness mindset". You can watch my video here:

Since typing this will take too long. So once you've done those things you may begin. This place has a lot of info so hunt around. It is more than likely that someone wants to achieve the same goal you do.

Of course you will only find this out once you know what your OWN goals are then go search for them.

So there you have it. A nice little starter kit for you.

**** I wish I had this stuff handed to me on a sliver platter... lol

Good luck.
